JOSH CARSON has backed York City striker Wes Fletcher to continue hitting the goal trail.

The midfielder watched his team-mate bag a brace in the Minstermen’s morale-boosting 2-0 win over Tranmere Rovers and reckons last season’s club top-scorer will kick on from netting his first goals in 2015.

“I am very pleased for him,” said the Irishman after a vital three points were secured at Bootham Crescent.

“It has been hard for him. He has struggled with injury and I think he needed that. He will probably kick on now and grab a few more.”

Carson was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet himself against Rovers, seeing a second-half shot rattle a post before another was saved at point-blank range by Owain Fon Williams.

The 21-year-old has been heartened by City’s new-found attacking prowess following manager Russ Wilcox’s shift to a 4-2-3-1 formation and he said the superb second-half display against Tranmere was the culmination of weeks of effort.

He added: “It was just a big lift. We needed three points and, thankfully, we got them. We played some good stuff. The pitch isn’t the best but we made do.

“The new formation is good. It gives us a bit of freedom. We can roam about and Michael Coulson is doing really well in his role. We are starting to get a few goals.

“The gaffer has said we have got the licence to roam about and, fortunately enough, I got my head on one against Luton. We should have grabbed three points then but were just unlucky.

“Going into it (last week), you would have taken four points but it was obviously disappointing to have a two-goal lead and then be unfortunate with the sending-off (for Jake Hyde). Wes came in and scored a brace. It worked out well overall.”

Reflecting after the right hand upright stopped him adding to his goal tally this season, Carson added: “I can’t complain. We got the three points, which was what matters. It was a great all round team performance and everyone deserves credit .

“When the second goal came in, it gave us a bit of leeway and I thought we played great free-flowing football and that’s what we have been trying to do for weeks on weeks. Unfortunately, we just haven’t been able to do that but that (win) shows what we can do.”

Wilcox, meanwhile, hailed City’s first clean sheet since the 0-0 draw with Plymouth - a period spanning seven matches.

He said: “It’s just as important as scoring goals. If you get a clean sheet it guarantees you at least a point and it was pleasing at both ends against Tranmere. I’ve talked from day one about being good in both boxes - especially at this level - or you will struggle.”
