WES FLETCHER says ending his three-month goal drought has given him a “massive boost”.

The striker, back in the side after Jake Hyde’s red card against Luton Town, grasped his opportunity with both hands – bagging a brace in York City’s 2-0 victory over Tranmere Rovers.

They were the former Burnley forward’s first goals since he netted in the 3-1 FA Cup loss at AFC Wimbledon in November and, admitting he has been frustrated not to score on a regular basis, he was delighted to have been the Minstermen’s match-winner.

“It has always been in my head that I have not scored but I am not one to shy away from it,” he said. “I know I have got to score goals. It’s obviously been frustrating.”

Fletcher got on the end of Brad Halliday’s cross-cum-shot to open the scoring on 20 minutes before unleashing a pile-driver 13 minutes after the break when cutting in from the right side of the area.

On his goals, he added: “The gaffer always tells me to get in between the sticks and luckily the ball just fell to me on the first one. The second one, I looked to play in behind because that is what I am best at and I saw the chance and let it go with my left foot.

“I was looking to pass it at first and I saw the opportunity to go a bit more central and saw the goal gaping.”

“It was going wide,” Fletcher laughed when asked whether Halliday’s shot for the opener would have found the net without his intervention.

“I know Brad’s not the best at shooting so I got myself in the box and, luckily, it just fell to me. That’s where I need to be."

He continued: “There’s a little bit of relief that we are out of the bottom two but it is not over. There are still a lot of games to play and we have to keeping showing the desire we did on Saturday.

“It’s a massive boost to myself because I haven’t scored for ages. I’ll always keep going and trying to get into positions and trying to score.”

Injury ended Fletcher’s campaign prematurely last season the 23-year-old admitted he is still working hard to get over the long-term effects of the medial ligament injury he suffered against Portsmouth.

He explained: “I can honestly say that it takes 12 months, from when I started training again, to get back to what I was before I got injured.

“I know it is a long process and it is frustrating for me and for the team but I have got to keep going – to keep going in the gym – and strengthening my leg and around my knee.”

While delighted with York’s first three point haul of 2015, Fletcher added: “It has given everyone in the dressing room a big boost but there’s still a lot of games to play.

"I think we have got to keep going, doing what we are doing and showing that desire and I am sure we will be out of it.

“I got the chance and took it. If we do what we did against Tranmere, and against Luton, I am sure we can come away with a good result (against Northampton).”
