YORK City boss Russ Wilcox insists his third-bottom side have sufficient quality to steer clear of trouble but is taking nothing for granted.

The Minstermen have dropped to 22nd in the Sky Bet League Two standings with Mansfield, who have played a game less, only below the Bootham Crescent outfit on goal difference.

Wilcox believes that City will be safe should the team continue to reproduce their performances in the last two matches despite only taking one point from a possible six during those encounters - Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Southend following the 1-1 home draw with Burton seven days earlier.

The City boss has, however, cited Bristol Rovers' fortunes last season as an example of why any complacency about his team's ability to pull clear of trouble must be avoided.

By mid-March, during 2013/14, the Pirates were as close to the play-off places as they were the Football League drop zone following a six-match unbeaten run that saw them collect 12 points from a possible 18.

But, despite boasting an eight-point buffer on the bottom two at that stage, the Memorial Stadium side were relegated on the final day of the campaign following a run of five defeats from their last seven fixtures.

Wycombe, now challenging for promotion, stayed up at their expense, even though two of the West Country club's players - right-back Michael Smith and midfielder John-Joe O'Toole - were named in League Two's PFA Team of the Year.

Recalling Rovers' fate, Wilcox said: "Over 46 games, you finish where you deserve to and we've got enough quality to end the season in a higher position, but I'm not taking anything for granted because I saw what happened to Bristol Rovers last season.

"I watched them beat Burton 2-0 last February just before John Ward stepped down as manager and then they drew against Scunthorpe in the next game so they took four points from two top-seven teams.

"Teams go on good and bad runs in this division and there's no better current example than Northampton. They lost five on the trot going into the new year but have now won the last four and have probably got one eye on a play-off spot.

"It's a crazy season and that shows how quickly things can change. We just need to keep believing that we can pick up more points."
