YORK City boss Russ Wilcox is casting his eye over potential goalkeeping targets should on-loan shot-stopper Alex Cisak return to Burnley next week.

Cisak’s current loan deal at Bootham Crescent expires after Saturday’s home game against Plymouth and, with long-serving netminder Michael Ingham still troubled by a shoulder problem, Wilcox is seeking quick clarity on his options between the sticks.

With the transfer window opening on Saturday, Wilcox would also be entitled to make a permanent signing, although that would result in three keepers on the Bootham Crescent books as Ingham and Jason Mooney are both contracted to the Minstermen.

“We need to make sure we are okay in the goalkeeping department because it’s a key position without a doubt,” Wilcox explained. “If Alex doesn’t sign, we need to know what else is out there because, if Burnley also get an injury or suspension, they have an automatic recall on him.

“We’ve got our finger on the pulse in case that happens and are looking at options other than Alex as well. You have to do that when you’ve got loan players.”

Despite carrying five loan players in his squad, Wilcox said he was pleased Sunday’s biggest win of the season - the 3-0 triumph at Carlisle - was achieved with only one of the temporary recruits in Stephane Zubar playing outfield.

The City boss said: “That was very pleasing and a huge positive. I think it shows that by adding loan players, we have brought competition and having people breathing down their necks has got more out of the players.”

Wilcox is expected to name the same starting line-up against the Pilgrims as Diego De Girolamo is still doubtful with a foot injury and Brad Halliday is serving the second game of a three-match suspension.

The Minstermen chief added that he is encouraged by the fact his team are not over- reliant on centre- forwards Jake Hyde and Wes Fletcher for goals.

City have averaged two a game during their last half-dozen outings but last season’s top marksman Fletcher has not found the net in that time and Hyde has only contributed three, with Wilcox saying: “We have scored 12 goals in our last six games and that’s a great return.

“Neither of our forwards - Jake or Wes - scored at Carlisle which, even though it might sound strange, was pleasing because it showed we can get goals from different areas of the pitch with Josh Carson, Luke Summerfield and Michael Coulson all weighing in with excellent strikes.”
