YORK City boss Russ Wilcox believes AFC Wimbledon might still be distracted by the prospect of an FA Cup home clash with Liverpool when they visit Bootham Crescent on Saturday, writes Dave Flett.

The Dons are poised to welcome Mario Balotelli, Steven Gerrard and Raheem Sterling to Kinsgmeadow during the first weekend of January after drawing the five-time European champions in the third round.

It is a tie that has conjured up memories of the 1988 FA Cup final, which saw Lawrie Sanchez’s goal inspire Wimbledon in their former guise, to a victory over massive favourites Liverpool.

Wilcox now reckons Neal Ardley’s men could either turn up at Bootham Crescent lifted by their plum draw or not entirely focused.

In 2005, the City boss was assistant manager when Scunthorpe were paired with Chelsea at the same stage of the competition.

Following a run of eight consecutive wins, the Iron went on to take just two league points from a possible 12 in the run-up to their trip to Stamford Bridge.

Said Wilcox: “It should really give the club a big boost but, sometimes, teams can take their eye off the ball and players can be trying to make sure they don’t get injured or suspended.

“I imagine, however, that their manager will be saying everyone has to work hard to try to get in the team for that match to prevent that from being the case.”
