RUSS WILCOX believes there is enough quality in his inherited York City squad to propel the club up the Sky Bet League Two table.

The Minstermen chief, two games into his Bootham Crescent reign, does not intend to add to his ranks ahead of Saturday's home game against Mansfield, having been encouraged by the team's 1-1 midweek draw at Morecambe.

A stoppage-time equaliser by Jack Redshaw robbed the visitors of a deserved victory but the performance of his third-bottom side dissuaded Wilcox from entering the loan market this week.

He said: "I've had a look at the squad over two games now and a lot of things pleased me on Tuesday night. I think there are certain areas where we might need to strengthen and I'm not going to say where, because that would be unfair to the lads in the group at the moment.

"I can say we do need a bit of cover defensively though. You want to make your mark as a new manager, but when I look to bring anybody in is down to the group.

"If we can get results and good performances, then there might not be any need to bring anybody in and, from day one, looking in from the outside, I thought there was enough quality in the club to move us up the table."

Wilcox admitted, however, that he has identified targets to strengthen the team, adding: "I do have players in mind and that's part of my job as manager but the question is whether those lads are available and willing to come to the club because it's difficult sometimes when you're at the wrong end of the table."

Ryan Jarvis will serve the second game of a three-match suspension against the Stags with long-term absentee Josh Carson still unavailable, Dave Winfield (thigh) also ruled out and Wes Fletcher unlikely to recover from his hamstring problem.

On the latter's situation, Wilcox confessed: "Wes Fletcher is still a concern. He's not been on the training ground this week, which makes him a major doubt for the weekend.

"I was hoping he would be available for my first game but it looks like we will be without him for my third game now and he's a key player for this football club."

With the likes of Jake Hyde, Jarvis, Tom Platt, Michael Coulson and Michael Ingham having all been troubled with injury too this term, Wilcox has employed part-time fitness coach Darren Simpson with a view to keeping the treatment room as quiet as possible.

Outlining the Harrogate-based Simpson's duties, last seasons's League Two Manager of the Year explained: "Darren will work with us on Tuesdays and Thursdays and is a great addition.

"I had him at Scunthorpe but the personnel has changed there. He will be giving lads extra work to do if they are out of the team or suspended and he will help with rehab for the lads coming back from injury.

"He will also help out with warm-ups and core work, in terms of strengthening and conditioning and we've got bands on the players to activate their glutes in training. Injury prevention is also another massively key role for Daz because, when you have a small squad, if you lose one or two key players it affects everything massively.

"He will be an extra pair of hands and that will allow myself and Steve Torpey to concentrate a bit more on the 11 players who will be starting the game."

Wilcox stressed, meanwhile, that the players would not carry the disappointment of missing out on maximum points in the cruellest of circumstances at Morecambe into the Mansfield match, reasoning: "You have to quickly move on in football and I want to look at all the positives because it was a terrific performance and, if we can reproduce that every game or get close to it, we will win football matches."

The City boss has also been preparing his players for a direct approach from the Stags, pointing out: "We know what to expect from Mansfield.

"There's no right or wrong way to play football and the way Mansfield play is very effective and difficult to play against. You have to combat the balls coming into your box, including long throws from both sides.

"You have to deal with the ugly bits and, then, if we can move the ball around as well as we did at Morecambe, there's a great opportunity for us to get three points."

Wilcox went on to reveal that he has not yet thought about possible extensions to the loan stays of strikers Ryan Brunt and Diego De Girolamo, both recruited by his predecessor Nigel Worthington.

"They have both impressed me but no decision has been made on their futures," he said. "I will be leaving that until further down the line and I will just keep assessing the group on a regular basis."

But the City manager has given permission for first-year pro Cameron Murray to go out on loan, adding: "I've spoken to Cameron Murray's agent and we've agreed he needs to go out and play some football because he needs to develop as a player and he can't do that when he's not in the team."
