YORK City boss Russ Wilcox had mixed feelings after seeing his side denied maximum points at Morecambe by substitute Jack Redshaw’s 94th-minute equaliser.

Redshaw struck deep into injury time to cancel out Michael Coulson’s 77th-minute opener, as the Minstermen were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw at the Globe Arena.

The point still helped City climb out of the Sky Bet League Two relegation zone and, while disappointed not to claim his first victory at the Bootham Crescent helm, Wilcox hailed a “fantastic 93 minutes” from his team.

He said: “I'm so disappointed for the players because they showed great quality as well as endeavour. I’m also so disappointed for the fans and the board because we deserved the three points in a nutshell.

“That extra two points would have been a massive lift in the position we are in. But, coming away from home and playing like that against a team sixth in the table, should give everyone great belief moving forward and we have to take that into our home match against Mansfield on Saturday.

“The players were very brave on the ball and kept it well, while moving up the pitch and creating opportunities, including a great goal by Couls. Our keeper hardly touched the ball in the first half and we were playing against the wind and I thought we were outstanding for the first 45 minutes.

“In fact, for 93 minutes, we were fantastic and we have now got to reproduce this performance. That’s the hard bit, but if we find consistency and perform like we did (at Morecambe), we will move away from the bottom very quickly.”

Wilcox was offered further cause for optimism with the players’ improved display coming despite the Lancashire weather wiping out all attempts at holding a training session prior to the match.

He added: “The game was very encouraging for me because it’s been a difficult period to come in with three games in a week and there’s been very little time to work on the training ground. We couldn’t do anything on the day of the game because of the weather, so it was all done on the tactics board really.”

Wilcox also felt his side should have been awarded a free-kick in the build up to Redshaw’s equaliser, reasoning: “I thought there was a foul on Michael Coulson but the referee did not give us much all night.

“The ball had a long way to travel from there, though, before it ended up in our net, so I will need to have another look at that on the DVD.”

Jake Hyde, meanwhile, was recalled to the side to partner on-loan Bristol Rovers striker Ryan Brunt and, on their display, Wilcox said: “They did very well to say we worked with them for about ten minutes in the morning. It looked like a partnership we can build on.”
