MICHAEL Coulson is hoping to miss his own stag do as he aims to fire York City into the Sky Bet League Two play-offs.

Should the Minstermen go on to reach the showcase final at Wembley on Monday, May 26, Coulson will also fly out alone to Greece the next day to marry his fiancee Rachel.

With his wife-to-be a teacher, Coulson had little alternative but to book his wedding for the May half-term week and the bachelor party - a 1980s weekend at Butlins in Skegness - has been organised for the second weekend of the month when City could be playing the first leg of a play-off semi-final.

Should there be a clash, however, the former Grimsby and Scarborough attacker would not find it a difficult dilemma.

"There would only ever be one winner in that contest," he admitted. "There's more than 30 people going on a coach from Scarborough to the stag do and a couple of Grimsby players were going to go too they will be missing it now too, because they'll be in the Conference play-offs.

"I've not really spoken about what will happen if we get in the play-offs. We will just see what happens and deal with it when it comes around but everyone has paid, so I assume they will just carry on without me.

"I've got my head around that and I would be pretty gutted if I actually went on my stag do now. I would have preferred a 1990s' weekend anyway.

"That would have been more my era but we couldn't find one and, if I do end up going, I won't know what to wear!"

On the logistical problems presented by the bride and bridegroom's respective professions, Coulson explained: "It was all booked before the start of the season and we decided to take a gamble on it.

"We have got to get married in half-term because Rachel is a teacher and we need the stag do to be before then as well. I have had to book a separate flight for the wedding in case we get to the final.

"We are due to fly out to Greece on May 24 two days before the final and the wedding day is on May 28, so that won't be affected which is the main thing. It might mean missing out on any celebrations afterwards but I am happy that I can get a flight to the wedding in time if we do get to Wembley."

Should the Minstermen return to action at the world-famous stadium where they won twice in 2012, Coulson will be hoping to improve on his only previous visit there as a player when Barnsley were denied an FA Cup final place following a 1-0 defeat to Cardiff.

Coulson was only a teenager at the time but, having also been part of the Tykes side that had earlier dumped a Chelsea team boasting the likes of Michael Ballack, Michael Essien and John Terry out of the competition, he has vivid memories of the occasion.

"I came on as a sub after 65 minutes in the semi-final at Wembley and it was unbelievable," he recalled. "I was 19 and there were more than 80,000 fans there.

"It was a big game and there were about 30 people from Scarborough for that too but we lost so I want to get back there and put that right. If we did get there, then to get York into League One would be a big achievement for everybody at the club."
