I'm sorry I can't support this transfer. He was nowhere near good enough for us last time, he's actually got worse since then. The thought of Rankine in a 433 makes me shudder.

And let nobody tell me "don't judge a player until he plays for City". I've seen this fella play 40+ times, I know his game back to front, and he's a very very poor choice.

NEGATIVE NEGATIVE NEGATIVE. fgs give it a rest.

who do you think we should sign.

that
A . Is affordable
B is Available
D is what we are looking for

some fans moan for the sake of it.

and in the real world with wage cap Rankine is more than likely all we can afford.

give the guy a chance . Can he do any worse that whats been on show in front of goal this season. i very much doubt it.
It too you just 6 minutes to stick the boot in. Some fan eh!

Just the type of signing we needed and another good option to have on the bench. May not be a popular choice with all City fans as he was a love him or hate him divided opinion type of player. However, he wins his headers and can hold the ball up which none of the current attackers can do.

When he came on against York at BC a few weeks ago he won more headers in 15 minutes than any of York's front 6 did all game. Hopefully will add a plan B to our game!

Welcome back Ranks!

Throughout this season, we've had no plan B.

Might Rankine's signing indicate that Mills is willing to try a different formation?

Welcome back Ranks, hope it works out - for all our sakes!

Bang on paintitred. The negativity is unbelievable! Some fans (or are they trolls) need to wake up and smell the coffee!

Welcome back Michael!

We need to remember we are not owned by rich arabs and that Millsy is working under tight constraints that will always mean that some signings are a gamble and may not work out. Rankine will add some much needed beef and is very welcome!

I thought it was a wind up when I read this, it smacks a bit of desperation, I phoned a mate and told him but made sure he was sat down before I threw it in the melting pot. Dont think this is the answer really, but stranger things have happened, we will no doubt be entertained to a football extrvaganza tonight, lets hope.

Ha, ha, ha - typical! At least if we do go down you'll be able to say "told you so". Who do you realistically expect to sign? Come on, be proactive, rather than just moaning, name some names of strikers we can afford and who would want to come.

I never thought that Rankine was a great player, but after he left I felt that we became a bit lightweight up front. So on that basis I welcome him back. Because at least you know what you are getting with Michael.

An excellent signing. He will provide a physical presence in the penalty area which we have sadly lacked all season and hopefully give opposing defenders a bit more work to do than at present.

Good signing - GM should get him straight into the side to-night and let's get some high balls up to him and for the other forwards to feed off the knock-downs and start putting the ball into the back of the net!! Welcome back Michael - a couple of strikes similar to the one you scored against Cambridge United in the FA Cup, will do nicely! This should also add a few more to to-night's attendance. COYR.

i'd love to know which players people think we should be signing? perhaps we should rock up to Port Vale with a £1mil bid for Tom Pope? oh but wait...we have no money and we can only make loan signings due to the transfer window being shut.
lets live in the real world. we've been saying for 6 months that we could do with a target man, and despite Ranks not being the best footballer on the planet, he is strong, physical, aggressive and he enjoyed playing for City in the time he was here. sometimes returning to a club can give you an extra 10-20% in effort (chris smith an ideal example from last season).
i'd throw him straight in for tonights game and give the Gills defence a real battle. get Walker and Blair down each side and it could prove effective. it's not like we've got any other option at the minute is it!?

ADAMCUTHBERT says...
11:31am Tue 12 Feb 13

He might not be the greatest player to ever 'grace' BC!

But if nothing else he frightens the life out of defenders when running in on goal! I wouldn't want to mark him!

Spot on with this comment. It has been too easy for too long playing against York's frontline so now there is pace along with strength to contend with.

Now Walker has a proper target man to play alongside what him start to score more goals from open play.

11:33am Tue 12 Feb 13

For ages people have been saying we need a forward who is big & strong, as we are too lightweight ... especially up front ! Now we sign a big, strong forward people are criticising it .... I just don't get it ?!! I for one welcome this signing and hope he takes on the role of strong bustling hold-up player for Walker to run off .... maybe then Walker will return to his goal-scoring powers of 18 months ago (I personally feel Walker's poor form has been due to the way in which he is asked to play ... not his ability). Although ... this would of course require a change in formation ?

This isn't being negative - it's being realistic. I hope it all works out - but I just can't see the logic in it.Yes a big unit up front - just this big unit ????

1. Cliche but true - never go back to your old club: Smith and Bullock great examples of this.
2. MR wasn't great at scoring for us in the Conference - why would he be better now than then?
3. We've now got as a potential strike force two players who can't make the first team at Aldershot, who, last time I looked were one of the lowest-scoring teams in the league.
4. I don't understand all this 'we're skint' stuff. You mean worse off than Accrington/Morecambe
/Barnet/Rochdale to name but 4 who have much lower gates and have had no Wembley/Cup runs in the last few years ?
5. You might say 'If not MR then who.? Well I don't have a list of squad members off hand, but really, there's noone at Leeds/Bradford/Scunn
y/Donny/Hull etc that need a bit of first team game time?

Yes I really hope it all works out and yes get there and cheer 'em on...but really I'm baffled.

We need to be positive about this, this a great signing, when long high balls have been played forward in previous matches they have been easily picked off by big centre forwards, having Ranks will give us that extra dimension.
He may not get lots of goals but get us more oportunities to score, if there's a centre forward out there that can score lots of goals out there he will be playing for big money at a higher level. This is a good signing within our budget. He will work his socks off to get a deal beyond this season you can guarantee that & that the type of player we need. Can't wait to hear "we all love Rankine!" Again, welcome & all the best Ranks!

Sigh:

1. There are plenty of examples of this working the other way, too, and players having great second spells with a club.
2. He has presence in the box, can win and hold the ball up to create for others -Walker has been asked to do this and has tried his best but he doesn't have the same physique
3. Potentially, yes, but unlikely to start together
4. Football finances haven't been solely dependent upon gates for at least a decade
5. It isn't only about who is available, it is also about who wants to come - players are not slaves, they have choice.

Sadly, will miss the match tonight as I'm working down in Cardiff but I shall be keeping my eye on the result. Here's hoping they win and, if they don't win, at least play well. COYR

roobarb85 i can see the reason for asking those questions, but in response...

1. Smith is an example of how it DID work, he was excellent last season in the final few months.
2. Ranks scored a goal every 4 games for us, not the best, but certainly not awful...and the key thing during his spell was that both Brodie and Reed (albeit just for 4 months) were prolific when playing alongside him....we must hope Walker will be as well.
3. Using Aldershot's record doesn't really mean too much as all teams play differently in terms of formation and creativity etc.
4. Accrington are a good example, but they have been a settled league side for many years, they have adapted to the rigours of the division. however, they are below us in the league, as are Barnet. Rochdale were in L1 last season i believe so had bigger gate-receipts coming in. Remember we basically didn't make any money from the trips to Wembley, see the financial figures.
5. If we went to a local club and brought in a striker with no first team/league experience, people wouldn't be happy with that either.

p.s enjoying the fact that you've raised your opinions in this way, unlike some others who just charge in with the 'mills out' banner.

Considering we have no money to spend on the tall strong premier league striker that a lot of people think we should get Rankine would appear a excellent choice. 1. He is tall. 2. He is strong. 3. He wins headers. 4. He can hold the ball. 5 He will keep defenders busy leaving space for others. 6 He knows the club well so should have no problems settling in.
On the down side he does not score a lot of goals, but if he has been brought back to play as I would hope in a 442 system as the main striker with walker playing off him I am sure he will create chances for Walker, Blair, Chambers etc. So all in all things look positive. IF WE PLAY 442.

Potentially a good move by Mills if we get the good side out of Rankine that we all know he has got. But we also know the other side to Rankines game. He may not score many but when he does they are sometimes special as i can think of two that have to be up there with the best goals ive ever seen.
If you look at when Brodie and Rankine played together i don't think Brodie would have got half the goals he did if it wasn't for Ranks with the flick ons and dragging defenders to create space for brodie so hopefully he's coming back to prove a point to the fans and Mills and we get the good side out of him for the remainder of the season.

Agree with most of this except point 4.
Rankine is a kind of lower league Heskey - he doesn't score that many goals, he doesn't link play, but on his day he gives defenders so many problems that others should be able to benefit. Defensively at set pieces he is usually a benefit also.
The question is how many times will our games coincide with him on his day?
For me the big problem this quarter has been the isolation of the man at the front. We need our central attackers to be closer together whether they're coming from midfield (a la Lampard) or in the hole behind the point of the diamond. With Rankine, his relative lack of mobility may actually be a benefit as Mills takes a pragmatic approach to the run in. It looks like the spine of the team has been strengthened this week. And the squad has a much more experienced look about it.
The yellowbacks, doom mongers and those with personal agendas will no doubt be queuing to share their bile with us if it doesn't click straight away but we certainly cannot accuse the club of sitting on their hands.

Lets judge at the end of the season. If we finish 3rd from bottom and stay in the division then that will do for me.

We don't have any control over who Mills brings in or what formation he plays. All I can say is he knows far more about managing a professional football team than we do.

I always said this season was going to be very very tough and I'm afraid we will be in a relegation dog fight there is no doubt about that.

Lots of differing opinions but he is kind of like getting Brodie back but without the pace so I guess as long as we can play to his strengths play another better footballer with some pace alongside he should give the opposing CBs a different problem to pushing JW in the back to win the ball.
GM has done something and got a bit of physical presence up front as we all thought was missing he just needs to adapt the tactics to suit the players he has just cannot be used as JW is.

well ive got to be honest and say my first reaction to this signing wasn,t great, didnt rate him in the conference and contrary to some i dont agree his effort was always what it could have been,i also didnt feel he really knew how to use his natural size and stature.but he is exactly the kind of player people have been crying out for,and h,mm lets see we are into feb looking more than a bit shaky.no money to spend.we are running out of options.and wether i or others on here rate Rankine or not its a certainty that defenders take a look at him and think omg.that in itself must take half the pressure and attention off Jason Walker or whoever else is up front.we arn,t scoring at the moment so even if he dosnt score but proves a distraction for someone else to do so hes got to be worth a try.If he,d been kept i rather think he woud have been who the fans had been shouting for some time ago.i dont even think it makes much difference a division higher i imagine league 2 defenders would be every bit as un impressed by facing the likes of Rankine as conference defenders.Welcome back Michael Rankine and lets hope this is the signing Gary Mills has got spot on. I would however have to disagree with the post stating that Rankine is a far better footballer than Reed though they are both players who divide opinion that not many can,and i rarely agree with that particulars posters opinion.Lets just hope whatever happens tonight players manager and fans are all together which is what we are going to need to pull things round.

Here's two thoughts for the Mills-bashers to ponder. 1. The manager has far less effect on the performance of a team than people realise. The players are the main factor in the outcome of a football match and sheer luck is the second most important factor. It's a statistical fact and I can prove it. 2. Mills may well have made mistakes in his first season in L2 ... and that's precisely why we must keep him and not replace him with someone who will make the mistakes all over again. We won't go down. 22nd place is a satisfactory result for this season.

In that case, please explain to me why he can't get in the Aldershot team ? This is definitely a backward step, panic measure. We have re signed a player who, when he was here last time spent most of his time on his backside pleading with the ref for free kicks. Someone who, when offered a new contract at York turned it down and went off to sign for the mighty Aldershot and now when he can't get a game for them comes running back here. I can however see the logic in signing McGrath as he has a lot of experience and hopefully will add a bit of steel to our midfield. On tonight's match, if I were picking the team I would start with Rodman and McDaid in a 442 with Blair and Chambers given strict instructions to get forward and get some crosses in. However, now that Rankine is back you would assume he will play so he would take the place of McDaid.

Lets hope we just don't revert to knocking high balls into him, which is what it appears some want on here. However if he can hold it up for others, great......like the lad, tries really hard, like Reed, but never really rated him....i really want him to prove me wrong this time....

Finally, Gary is admitting he was wrong. This could be the catalyst for him to try a Plan B.
He didn't want Ranks, now he does. The worm has changed, get behind the team tonight.
It wasnt that Gary didnt want Ranks it was merely the fact we had a cash bid for him from a football league outfit and could not refuse the guy a chance in the league! I for one didnt want him to go first time round and certainly welcome him back now. Just a shame Reed is not in attendance as Walker must be due an injury, not that his presence would be missed anyway of late!

Sadly just another sign of how badly this season has gone downhill. Rankine was not even an ever present for us in the conference and can't hit a barn door from five yards and has cant get a game for a team below us in the league.Yes he has a physical presence which we do need but as stated elsewhere Mills has signed one hell of a lot of players and we look no better. Rankin might make an early impression as he often does but its more and more just a case of hanging on now, its obvious any ambition has gone well and truly out the window.

In that case, please explain to me why he can't get in the Aldershot team ? This is definitely a backward step, panic measure. To be honest Duffs when we signed Rodman I said we should have signed Rankine instead, I believe I was right too. Now we just need a brute at the back and one in midfield to stop us being bullied.

Gentlemen,
the manager has just done what the majority of you on here seem to have been asking for some time now.. Yet - still lots of moaning... What can he do to please some of you? To listen to the confidently outspoken comment that fills this medium up, everytime we have a bad day, or make a signing that doesn't immediately deliver the goods, it would appear that we have a limitless and as yet untapped pool of managerial talent just waiting to step in and solve our worries.... What is it? can't you take the salary drop?
To echo the sentiments of many on here, now is the time we need to get behind the club, the team, the manager, the directors, and as supporters, lets try to pull together as one. It was a long painful stay in the conference - I think I'm too old for another one..

IMO GM and the board have both come on in leaps and bounds in their respective time here, and whilst nobody is happy with some of the poorer decisions that with the benefit of hindsight are now quite plain to see, clearly the lessons learned from mistakes tend to stick longer. It is not long since the fans main worry was that GM would be snapped up by some aspiring Championship club. I dare say that without some of those naive errors, he may have left some time ago.
It's just one club, that we all care about, lets just be united in our support...

Good match, even chances pretty much, Ranks caused them problems throughout and took some of the pressure off the midfield by winning headers. Parslow/ O'Connell looked a very solid centre-back pairing. McGrath looked pretty good to me, although Obeng was fairly anonymous and lightweight. Gills only looked like scoring from spectacular long-ranged efforts, but also played a solid, physical game pretty well. The only real downside that I could see was an inability to find the back of the net, but there were encouraging signs (esp. Ranks winning about 6 headers in a row off corners, and Fyfields late surge/ cross across an open goal) that suggest we're close to success on that front. All in all, an enjoyable night out - and proof that the manages does indeed know what he's doing, regardless of what some *ahem* supporters might think.

Can't say I'm usually in agreement with these massive points but in this case it's more than I was expecting. Hopefully this sets the team up for a massive game on Saturday when we have to be pushing for all three. I have a feeling McGrath will turn out to be a very good signing.

It WAS a massive point and a stop-the-rot performance. Almost knicked three points towards the end, Matty Blair just in front of a good ball in. But to all the doomsday merchants out there - we were at least as good and probably a shade better than Gillingham tonight and showed what we can do. We can and we will survive this season and the fans have a part to play.

That was a far better performance and the Longhurst did us proud. McGrath looked good and Rankine was a breath of fresh air. We also looked a lot more solid and we certainly didn't miss Calamity Smith at the back. The downsides were Challinor and Chambers. Both very wasteful and let the side down. Also, Rodman!!! What's he about. A very good point but within the bigger picture, we've dropped another 2 points at home.

The pie was very nice thanks but the tea could have had a bit more milk. You should perhaps note that the crowd was just over 2500 so clearly there are lots of fans who have become tired of Mills. I on the other hand attend as many games as I can because I 'enjoy' following York. What I don't enjoy is a manager who is out of touch with the supporters and out of touch on how to get the best from his squad of players.
