York City sign Swansea City's Curtis Obeng on loan

GARY MILLS feels Curtis Obeng will prove a “good attacking full-back” for York City after signing the defender on a month’s loan from Premier League Swansea City.

The 23-year-old, a former England Under-19 international who shone for Wrexham in the Blue Square Bet Premier before being snapped up by the Swans for £200,000 in last year’s January transfer window, is likely to go straight into the Minstermen squad for Saturday’s visit of Morecambe to Bootham Crescent.

Obeng played in the same Manchester City youth team as Micah Richards and Daniel Sturridge before being released and signing for the Robins in 2009, and has recently had a loan spell at the Minstermen’s League Two rivals Fleetwood Town.

He will shore up the defence following the loss of Lanre Oyebanjo for six weeks with a fractured skull and the move came about, said City’s communications and community director Sophie Hicks, because the pair share the same agent.

“Jason (McGill, chairman) has taken a keen interest in Lanre’s well-being,” she said. “Lanre’s agent is also Curtis’ and Jason asked if Curtis would be interested in coming to York. Gary was keen for him to come and we would like to thank Swansea City for their co-operation.

“We look forward to welcoming him to the club.”

Boss Mills said: “He’s a good attacking full-back. We have left ourselves a bit short because of injuries in that area and we felt we needed to bring another one in.

“He is right-sided but Daniel Parslow proved how versatile he is and had an unbelievable game against Gillingham at left-back.”

Obeng’s signature means City won’t be picking up Northern Irish defender Dean Jarvis for the time being. The 20-year-old played for the Minstermen at Blackburn reserves yesterday, a game Mills’ men lost 6-0.

The two sides were scoreless for about an hour but, as the likes of Oli Johnson, John McReady, Ben Everson, Alex Rodman and Jon Challinor tired as the second half wore on, a strong Rovers outfit – including international strikers David Goodwillie and Nuno Gomes – took control.

“We looked at him yesterday and decided that, at the moment, we are not going to do anything,” Mills added of Jarvis.

“David McDaid got a run-out in the game and Lee Bullock, Jameel Ible and Tom Allan also played.

“We lost 6-0 but it was a very strong Blackburn side with a lot of first-team players.

“It was a good work-out and, although it’s easy to say, the scoreline doesn’t really reflect the game. It was 0-0 at half-time and the players had done superbly well. We had a few young players in there and others that needed a game.”

Added the City boss: “It was a work-out. We needed it for fitness and they probably had £30 million to £40 million (worth) of players out there. There were a lot of internationals.

“The players all need these games. In the last quarter they got tired and that’s when the goals came, but it’s the last half-hour that was good for the fitness.”

Not surprised that the Manager has brought in another defender. For we are not completely clear of the drop-zone yet. But it does not send out much encouragement to players already at the club, who were hoping for a chance to get back into the team.

To be fair though Oyebanjo is out which leaves us with Challinor or Parslow. This guy is way better from what I saw.

Who are the players coming back from injury that could effectively cover for Banjo? Yes, we have Challinor but he's not an actual right back & a number of times last season he got found out regarding pace, he'd be found out even more this year. So this is excellent news all round IMO.

If he was worth 200K to Swansea this time last year, I'm quite hopeful he can make a positive impact on our season.

This guy is quality, was rated the best RB in the conference when at Wrexham. Saw him play a few times solid and quick. Very happy with this signing.

Sounds like a very astute move by GM and a good signing- we need the Back Four to remain strong through to the end of the season but we also need our new frontmen, (together with Matty Blair, Jason Walker and Alex Rodman) to start hitting the back of the net, commencing with Saturday's game against Morecambe!! COYR.

Potentially a very good signing and I remember his impressive displays against us for Wrexham. Can't wait to see the 'new look' City on Saturday.

Great signing by Gary mills but still think we need a left back and a youth goalkeeper (someone to learn from Ingham and Musselwhite )

YoRkIe 59 you should refer to them as 'non league Luton Town', for that's what they are these days!

Tug job says...
12:20pm Wed 30 Jan 13

That doesn't even make sense - are you literate? One thing that is beyond doubt, however, is that Luton Town are now firmly established and recognised as a non league football club.

According to the BBC reports, Charlie Lee strongly denies scoring an own goal for Gillingham on Saturday. He says it went straight in from the corner without him touching it. If it's true, McLaughlin should be getting the credit - time to look at the Sky highlights again.

Not a chance of that happening, they wouldn't go for him. Not proven at this level yet, never mind the division above!

I'm sure he signed a 3 year contract when he came so we'd be entitled to a fee at least

Striker Jason Walker has re-iterated his commitment to York, although he admits he wants to play at the highest level

The 28-year-old, who is out of contract in the summer, has scored eight goals for the Minstermen this campaign in their first year back in the Football League.

He caught the attention of a number of clubs last year and could still be the target of further interest before the January transfer window shuts on Thursday night.

Walker remains committed to the Minstermen, but is keen to test himself at a higher level.

"Obviously I'm hungry to play and prove myself at the highest level possible," he said.

"But I'm a York City player and until I hear otherwise I'm 100 per cent focused on helping us get into the play-offs."
