Halstead is in danger of becoming a ghost town, according to those in favour of Tesco moving in.
Members of Braintree Council’s planning committee emphasised on Tuesday that it was the specific application that they were unhappy with and not Tesco per se, but a group of unhappy residents and businesses believe people would pick fault wherever a supermarket was planned.
Moira Fooks, 58, of Coggeshall Way, said: “Braintree Council need to wake up to the fact that Halstead is becoming a ghost town and it needs some life put back into it.”
Hazel Callaghan, 44, who grew up in Halstead before moving to Great Yeldham, has started a survey which she hopes will illustrate the level of support for Tesco's plans.
