York City manager hopeful of Walker recovery

YORK City boss Gary Mills is hopeful striker Jason Walker will recover from tonsilitis in time to face Exeter City at Bootham Crescent tomorrow (3pm).

Walker was withdrawn at half-time in the 3-0 victory over Burton Albion having opened the scoring from the penalty spot.

Although there was good news on Walker, Mills revealed that eight-goal leading marksman Ashley Chambers will be sidelined for up to six weeks with a torn stomach muscle.

The manager said: “Ash needs an operation on his stomach in the next few days and we will be without him for four to six weeks.”

Alex Rodman has deputised for Chambers in the last three matches and Mills has now decided that he would like to extend the Aldershot forward’s stay beyond tomorrow’s match, which signals the end of his loan spell from the Hampshire club.

“I needed to see a bit more from Alex and I got that on Tuesday in the Burton game after glimpses in previous matches,” the City boss said.

“We haven’t got an abundance of strikers available at the moment so I would like to try to keep him.

“I’m still waiting to speak to Dean Holdsworth to find out whether he will let him come back though and we might have no choice in the matter.”

The Minstermen will be tackling an Exeter team targeting a fifth successive away win tomorrow, although the visitors will be without suspended 16-goal top scorer Jamie Cureton.

But Mills is paying little attention to either of those two considerations and concentrating solely on the performance of his own team.

He said: “Their away form is up there with Gillingham so they will be confident, but they are missing their leading scorer who got sent off and deservedly so from what I’ve seen.

“All of that doesn’t change anything though, because what happens is down to us.

“In our last two matches, we’ve played against two other sides pushing for the play-offs and we’ve been better than them. We’ve got a lot to prove still though because our League position does not say that.”

City have rearranged their postponed home clash with table-topping Gillingham for Tuesday, February 12.

Meanwhile, former City striker Richard Brodie today joined Blue Square Bet Premier side Grimsby Town on loan from Crawley until the end of the season.

It is believed that Brodie’s representatives had been in contact with the Minstermen to declare their client’s interest in a second spell at Bootham Crescent.

Mills admitted yesterday afternoon that he was mulling over whether to bring him back to the club, but he joined the Mariners this morning.

Brodie scored 37 goals in his last full season for City in 2009/10 before joining Crawley on deadline day the following August.

He has since been farmed out to Fleetwood and Morecambe, where he has netted six times in 27 outings this term.

The former Newcastle Benfield Bay Plastics striker has scored in each of his last two matches against Mills’ Minstermen for Fleetwood and Morecambe.

“Richard is a striker who seems to have scored every time my teams have played against him,” Mills said.

The comment about Richard Brodie is a strange bit of reporting. By the time most people read it, Brodie will have already signed for Grimsby Town. So it doesnt matter if you wanted him back or not, its not going to happen. But if he helps Grimsby Town to beat Luton to promotion, then he will be a good signing. Good luck to him!

I would have missed the first couple of games this season as I was in the US - the only way I could think of to get the radio commentary was to set up a Skype link with someone back home, and have them aim a radio at their computer microphone. A bit of a hassle, but surprisingly clear sound quality!

at a mad guess id say Grimsby got in there first while Mills was mulling it over tho it dosnt sound like he had time to do much mulling.Am i correct in thinking his contract at Crawley is finished at the end of this season.I know by no means all agree on here but i think he,d do ok in league 2,tho i very much doubt any higher i don,t think he,s got the nous any higher than that.

Grimsby have been going well getting decent crowds, think they had 7k in against Lincoln I would guess they are confident of their income to pay Brodies wages which we might not be so keen on disrupting our dressing room with still if he goes well there he might be a consideration if out of contract & looking at Lg 2 football. Need GM to be very shrewd & bring in intelligently rather than what looked like a couple of rushed ones in prior Januarys. I have a great deal of faith in GM but am willing to accept he is only human& will not get all decisions right but the majority he will just still cannot work out why he places such faith in C Smith but he is indeed our manager, so its his job his industry but I am baffled. Looking forward to another never say die football exhibition tomorrow :).

I like Brodes. Could still do a job for us. However, he needs some decent wide players whipping in lots of crosses and through balls and we don't really play that way. Interesting to see how he gets on at Grimsby, if he can't hack it there he may go down as a one season wonder.

If Walker has got real tonsillitis there's no way he'll be ready to play tomorrow as it's a real debilitating illness and can take usually 10 - 14 days to recover from. Maybe he just had a sore throat. Of more concern though is the loss of Ashley Chambers for many weeks - a real blow.

Because he's not good enough at this level - not good enough for Crawley, not good enough for Fleetwood, not good enough for Morecambe and not good enough for us, nor does he fit in with our style of play. Credit to Richard for the one and a half good seasons he had with us (and for the injection of cash by Crawley!)but he's simply not up to Football League standard.

I was a great admirer and we have a lot to thank him for in the past - Mr Brodie has too much baggage and off field problems - to bring him back would be a bad move not only for the Club but all team moral. Why did he leave Fleetwood & Morecombe? Brining back Jonathan Smith didn't work out and I don't think Brodie would either. On Brodie it was reported that Brodie needed the signing on fee money.

Great to see Pottsy doing well - good professional - waited his chance and is now a regular part of the team - he was in a long line of players fighting for a midfield roll, Paddy, Kerr, Smith, Bullock - also Parslow - a lot of the posters on this website early season did not have Pottsy on their want list - all the above were given their chance - it's now Pottsy chance.

Dave McGurk - has been out well over twelve months with knee and throat problems - it takes time to regain your fitness, match fitness is another level - at the start of the season, in his Benefit game he could only manage fifteen minutes - he needed match practice - he asked to go on out on lone to get match fitness - he was due to go to Hereford until Chris Doig got injured and Clark Carlisle jumped ship - thankfully he didn't go. Playing himself back into form and the team - well done David McGurk.

The addition of Pottsy and McGurk must be like getting two new signings for Gary Mills

Bring on Exeter and another three points

Tell you what I will turn up as usual & clap the entire team on and off the pitch just like always because stuff like this does not upset professional footballers but booing them after they have done their best might well do it.

In Mills and City I firmly trust, come on City.
Please ignore "pevery" it should read every, apologies for the slip up in spelling.
Oh so sorry my post did not meet with your approval, I was mistaken in my perception that this was an "open" forum in which I could voice my opinions however outlandish they may be.
Tell you what I will turn up as usual & clap the entire team on and off the pitch just like always because stuff like this does not upset professional footballers but booing them after they have done their best might well do it.
If you need a forum to disagree with someone voicing a free opinion then perhaps you could be the Iranian regimes press officer. I have my likes & dislikes its a free country jog on.
Come on City!!!
Steady, Easingwold Dave will be back on to tell us we are not allowed opinions. What a ridiculous thought, its not like we live in a democracy.
Please please do not lend me your support however correct it might feel to do so, I consider you to be quite mad but entitled to voice your opinion. It will only add a new and unwelcome element of ridicule to the Fascist "Total Support State".

Need GM to be very shrewd & bring in intelligently rather than what looked like a couple of rushed ones in prior Januarys. I have a great deal of faith in GM but am willing to accept he is only human& will not get all decisions right but the majority he will just still cannot work out why he places such faith in C Smith but he is indeed our manager, so its his job his industry but I am baffled. as regards Brodie doing nothing at such as crawley fleetwood morecambe.Crawley bought him for the same reason they did a lot of players simply to stop him playing against them, they never played him much cos they had about ten strikers.fleetwood pretty much same senario just had a massive sqaud of which he was a minor part,as for morecambe they wanted to keep him but for whatever reason couldnt.what id love to know id who are these better players that are gonna come and play for us that we can afford if Mills dosnt think for example Brodie is good enough please lets see who your bringing in that is and who is actually willing to come to us.is it Ashikodi,Johnson,Hen
derson,Reedy who some of us like but mr Mills obviously dosnt(even tho he signed him just like all the rest),i think some people need to stop living in cloud cukkoo land as regards who we can bring in perhaps including G.M himself.
