York City go down 3-0 at Chesterfield in npower League Two (From York Press)

Just on the way back. Although dissapointing it's important to remember that this is the same team which gave us one of the greatest seasons in York City history. Of course it will take time to adapt to this division. Before the season I would have taken the league position we are in. It seems to me as if some York fans think that anything other than promotion is failure. Also Chesterfield had a very smart ground, shame their fans created no atmosphere at all untill 85 mins.

Agreed. Fans a bit of an embarrassment today, especially the guy in glasses booing at the end shouting 'its not good enough at Christmas' with tears going down his face. Ha! Drunk moron!

Second half, a combination of poor defending, lack of finishing and some DREADFUL refereeing blew the game for us. As said above, we're really not doing too badly all things condidered. As long as we keep beating the very worst teams in the league (Barnet, Bristol Rovers, Aldershot etc.) we'll be safe. If we make a few good signings and get the defense sorted, we could finish top-half.

Should have been, yes. In Mills' defense, Doig and Smith were perfectly capable defenders at conference level, so he could be forgiven for that - but needs to be changed now.

I think it's fair to say our opinion on last seasons defence differed even then. He has perhaps been unlucky with Doig who has gone backwards speed wise since after a number of injuries and he simply can't keep up with league level forwards. Smith just looks a liability now. I can't comment on today's game as I was not there but I've seen enough at home to know we need two new centre halves.

I went to the game today , great support as always , we played very narrowly and only Jamal got wide and down the line when he got a chance , at times all the outfield players were in one third of the pitch with there being no room for our passing game to thrive , sometimes you need a player out wide to switch play and unfortunately without coulson and chambers we didn't have that today. It deserved to be a dour 0-0 draw though and not 3-0 to them , We can have a go at Smithy for that back pass but every centre half has made that mistake . onwards and upwards.

York City showed today how predictable they are. A team that is capable of playing nice football, without killing off the opposition. At the same time we always look likely to concede a goal or two, especially from set plays. We need to grind out a few results by being more clincal up front, and keeping a tight ship at the back. But that is easier said than done unfortunately. Great away support as usual from the City faithful.

Like Duffy I wasn't there today so cannot comment on that but based on the match report and what I have seen in our home games it is very clear we need a big change at the back.
I haven't seen C Smith play well since Wembley. It is obvious he isn't League standard. Doig too seems limited by his lack of pace.
All well and good harping back to last season and what these players achieved but we have moved on. Sadly some of these players aren't good enough for where we now find ourselves.
I fear Mr Mills has too much faith in C Smith and his stubbornness will be his and our downfall. We desperately need to stop the rot of this leaky defence. Once that is sorted I think we will be fine and can hold a place in mid table which will be a great achievement.

With limited budget to work with at York City we are going to be well beaten from time to time in this league.It is a big learning curve for the players and management like wise.As long as is steady progress in the next 2 seasons supporters should be happy.

We looked ok in the 1st half and could have easily scored straight after they did, but the lineswoman had a shocker and was a stonewall penalty when Walker got brought down, however without Chambers we looked toothless and need new faces upfront and at the back

As with everyone who watched the game it looked like we would grind out a draw, lacking an in form forward we struggled to finish any of the openings we created. Chesterfield seemed a similar outfit to us no hulking target men perhaps using the width a little better but once we conceded & chased the game we got stretched & having two relatively immobile CB,s then we got done being counter attacked.
I am happy enough with mid table given that this is a transitional season after having escaped the conference with probably the 4th best team. Still the same problems though nice football with little guarantee of a finish to make up for a less than ideal defence I do not think we have moved forward with Des Little as defensive coach, though I appreciate GMs workload might have reduced please get Dan Parslow into CB he is mobile enough to make up for the two incumbents lack of pace/mobility and get a commanding CB in there are a number of very decent conference players assuming we cannot stretch to a league CB.
We as fans cannot tell GM how to manage as he is part of the football industry employed as a professional but even to us amateur enthusiasts can tell all is not well among the back 6 that includes Ingy & Kerr, given the managers preference to play the ball to feet you need players at the back comfortable on the ball capable of taking the ball into space drawing in the opposition & whilst improved somewhat Cpt Smith does little to fill me with confidence too error prone & not a great player of the ball.
On a positive note our players showed great heart keeping going to the end for this I applaud them. Whilst I do not want a return to the dour unimaginative football of the Walker Foyle era
Danny & TY were a very effective partnership & had the confidence of their goalkeeper in particular.
Still come on city great club great fans lets get it sorted!!!

Seems to me that the emerging pattern is that we play well for the first 30 to 45 minutes, maybe get a goal and then seem to lose our way and get a bit sloppy..............
.fix it and we must surely improve.

I was at the game and agree totally with keith&carol. We played much the better football but as is happening too often this season, the defence wasn`t good enough. Changes need to be made. Happy with mid table this season.

Thought we bossed half, need bit more quality and why when we get ion to an oppents box we wanna walk it in is beyond me..spent half my time thinking hit it hit the bloody thing...Second half caught early then it went wrong from there. As millsy said game of two halfs...Need an old head to steady it when opp's score calm the team down. when they scored first yesterday we panic and loose shape and game plan january window opens soon

Too many players who were average at Conference level. We were found out at times last season so what happened to instill the belief that they could consistantly compete in League football?

That said we do have a small budget with not much to spend on transfers but I fear that Mills faith in last years squad may not be repaid.

I was at the game yesterday also, and agree with this post and several others. But unlike a lot of the folks who post on here I don't profess to be an expert, what I would suggest however is that the basic analogy for ANY team is that you defend from the front and attack from the back and that includes the midfield, City did not do this yesterday, as was quiet obvious from the first 2 goals given away, the third was something that All of our defence have been responsible for and suffered at some point in the last season or 2. So I would suggest that blaming the defence and individuals every time we concede or lose is wrong in most cases. Just take a look at how many chances City miss to score let alone chances created, how many times we give the ball away up front and in midfield that could and would win us games if we hadn't !! Everyone is entitled to an opinion of cause, and I would agree that there have been times when the defence have been at fault and they should be if warranted criticised, but please take a look at the bigger picture. Yesterday the game was not lost by the defence but by the WHOLE team. Please get behind the TEAM and stop undermining them with incorrect posts, anyone who is in a managerial position at work knows it takes a blend of skills and individuals to create a good team, and City are a good team with a good manager and they will get better they just need time, half a season in this division is not enough and a lot teams, managers and players in this league would agree, of that I am sure. City WILL come good and in Mills and the Team we should all trust. Come on CITY.

Sorry but while I agree with much of the post including defending from the front it's been obvious right from the first game against Wycombe that the defence was not strong enough and its simply not league two standard. When was the last time we even kept a clean sheet? Put it this way if its strong enough Mills won't change it over the January transfer window, lets wait and see if that happens.

Chesterfield happy to sit in their 451 formation in the first half and let let the City midfield run themselves ragged in their own half. Problem as usual this term was with the front 3. Blair closely marked, Walker's distribution abysmal and Rodman ineffective. When Chesterfield pushed up in the second half City lost their shape and the midfield was overrun leading to the defensive errors. However given our limited resources and GM's belief in 433 then we need some more presence up front. I would love to see Jamal on the left hand side of the front 3. He has pace, strength, the ability to get round the outside to the byline, great crossing ability and a powerful shot. Come on Gary be a bit creative with the resources we currently have. There is not lot wrong with the existing squad that scoring a few goals will not solve

It seems like the general concensus is that we were not particularly poor yesterday, which I agree with, and it's great that people aren't over-reacting after a loss for a change.

What annoyed me about the way we played yesterday was the lack of forward movement for large spells of the game, especially from Smith/Doig/Kerr (and, frustratingly, Parslow was dragged into it too). It seemed like everytime Smith or Doig received the ball - usually a short pass from Ingham - the ball would be passed across the back 4 at a leisurely pace, until one of the Spireite forwards rushed them, whereupon they would pass it back to Ingham (who would hoof it up-field). What is the point in doing that?! If Ingham is going to belt it upfield, he can do it at the first instance and cut out all the risky mucking about passing around the back. If he's going to pass it out to his defense - which I think is generally a good idea- they should be looking for the quickest forward pass they can make to get it out of our own half. Only Fyfield was really getting the ball forward with accuracy. Equally, Kerr would often receive the ball, then either back-pass or run into a knot of opposition players and lose it immediately. Even from throw-ins deep into their half, the thrower would often immediately look back towards our own half to make the throw, instead of looking for an attacking run.

I'm happy with the way things are going this season, if we make sufficient improvements (both with our existing squad and any new signings) we'll be fine - might even make a surprise push for a top-10 position. At the end of the day, we're already 14 places above where we finished last season, so I can't complain too much.
