Gary Mills points finger over York City’s lack of ‘hunger’
12:00pm Monday 10th December 2012 in News
By Dave Flett, Sports reporter
DISAPPOINTED York City manager Gary Mills complained that Plymouth were “hungrier” than his players in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Home Park.
A Jamal Fyfield own goal and Nick Chadwick’s late header condemned the Minstermen to only their third league defeat on the road in 2012.
But Mills admitted that the better team won on the day as Argyle registered their first victory in ten matches.
The City chief said: “We were second best and they won all the second balls from start to finish. They thoroughly deserved the three points and we deserved what we got – absolutely nothing.
“We passed the ball very well in our last match at Rochdale but you need the ball first to enable you to play. They were in our faces from the word go and did not allow us to pass it.
“If that happens, you have to make sure you are first to the ball and just hook it up the pitch if you have to. They did that sometimes and our back four were under pressure from the first minute. Theirs were not.
“It’s a long way to come to perform like that and we have to learn from the game because you cannot play without the ball – you have to go and get it. Plymouth wanted it a bit more than we did.
“They were switched on and looked hungrier and that’s what hurts most.
“I counted that they put the ball in our box six times from free-kicks in the opening 20 minutes just because they had won the ball. We didn’t do that once until right at the end.”
Mills even switched to an unfamiliar 3-4-3 formation when he gave Danny Blanchett a rare outing on the left side of midfield midway through the second half.
On that experiment, he explained: “I did a couple of things and I’ve not done that (played 3-4-3) before. They only had one up front and I wanted to push us further up the pitch.
“We decided to be more direct to try to get something out of the game that way.
“We needed to try something different to try to nick an equaliser, as poorly as we were playing, but we never got into a situation where we looked like we were going to score.” Mills will now decide whether to bolster his squad this week by recalling Lee Bullock or Jonathan Smith, or both, from their respective loan spells at Gateshead and Luton.
Former Swindon midfielder Smith was on target during Luton’s 3-0 home win over Alfreton on Saturday.
First-year pro Tom Platt could also be another option after bagging a brace for Harrogate Town in a 2-1 win at Colwyn Bay – taking his goal tally to five since joining the Blue Square Bet North outfit last month. Mills added: “I have to make decisions and we will see where that takes us.”
The Minstermen boss has also challenged his team to improve a home record that has reaped just two Bootham Crescent triumphs in League Two this term.
Bristol Rovers and Gillingham visit North Yorkshire on consecutive weekends for City’s next two matches and Mills said: “What happened (at Plymouth) doesn’t happen to this team every week and we’ve now got to go in front of our fans during the next two games and show the same desire that Plymouth did to win a game in front of theirs.”

Praying for a good display on Saturday and our 3rd home win of the season is surely long overdue.

n here, that must be addressed! Their second goal was not disimilar to Rochdale's first - (backing-off from a determined, deep run and allowing a shot at goal when a challenge(s) should have been made) and when Chadwick followed-up Ingham's fine save from two yards out - not a City defender in sight - so again, something wrong with our defensive tactics/covering. The majority of City fans realise that this is a transitional season but GM has mentioned in this paper on more than one occasion, that he see's no reason why we can't be up towards the top of the table this season and challenging for honours. What is disappointing, is the undoubted talent that this team possess and yet, becomes so inconsistent and un-focussed and gifts points to teams that we have been more than equal to. If a realistic aim is mid-table safety, then, okay, but from what I have seen, if we could tighten-up and organise the defence better and find a consistent goal-scorer (average a goal every two games), then we could be challenging towards the Top Seven part of the league table and with confidence running high.COYR.

I can`t believe some of the postings I saw after the defeat at Plymouth. A bad day at the office. It happens ! A pity that the loyal supporters who travelled all the way to Plymouth saw such a poor display. There was an excellent article by Ian Hey in the Torquay home programme. I suggest it is read asap by certain people ! We are in a comfortable position in the league at the moment and GM is THE best manger for quite a while !
I witnessed the Plymouth match and it was dreadful.
Our record at the moment is 3 wins in 15 matches.
Gary Mills was very poor in his last venture into the football league with Notts County. I hope that Notts County experience was just a one off. But the players looked disinterested and tired on Saturday, not for the first time over the past 6 weeks.
Unmotivated, disinterested, low energy levels, low concentration, poorly organised. All these have been visible in most games over the past few weeks. Might be a blip, might be something much worse.

I think there must be something seriously wrong in the camp for the players to give such a lacklustre display.
All the players who were brought in to inject the push into the league have now gone.
I hope GM is going to use the saved wages from Bully and Smithy to pull some major signings in January. Previous history doesn't bode well and I hope he doesn't blow the money on poor signings. We need to rebuild quickly but I suspect a cloud has descended on the current management team and this is rubbing off on the players.
This team has surpassed expectations in the past and GM is a fighter so let's support the team to see what happens in the transfer window.

We are doing averagely this season but the trend of displays recently is worrying as are Mr Mills's selections and substitutions. 3 points on Saturday against a (currently) poor side will steady the ship...but you know what generally happens when teams on a poor run come to play us!!?

Tugjob and Roobeck make some good points. We need to get behind the team and management they don`t become useless overnight.Sure we`ve had some disappointing results but we know the team can play good football. They are lacking consistency at the moment but nothing a couple of wins won`t put right.
We knew this league wasn`t going to be a walk in the park and we have limited resources so we have to persevere with our squad and back GM to keep us there.

With regard to Bullock and Smith, I'm not really bothered whether we see them again as I think they are currently playing at their level in the BSP. However, I think it might be interesting to see if Tom Platt can bring something to the team.

The final points tally over the course of a season are a true reflection of a teams performances. Last season we ended fifth in the Conference. Any team that finishes in this postion are not going to run amok in NPower League 2. We have somehow amassed 27 points from 21 games - less than half. We are fifteenth in a division with 24 teams - less than halfway. We play nice tippy tappy football from time to time which is not suited for this standard of football and look what is happening - we are sliding down the table.

Are you serious ?,
I didn't witness the Plymouth game, however I was at Barnet, Southend, Bradford, .......and Rochdale etc
and at each and every away game Ive attended (prior to this one) the home supporters I've spoken to are without exception complimentary towards City's style of play.
And let's not forget who we need to thank for that !!!
Trust me, I'm no Sycophant, and at times I'm as frustrated as the next man at not going 442 ........when needed.
But to doubt the man in December when were 15th in the league is ridiculous
Stick with it Millsy. ........COYR
