York City's October flourish is thriller to Gary Mills

AS York City’s first FA Cup salvo of the season looms, manager Gary Mills is burning with pride at the club’s return to the Football League.

The City chief revealed that had he been offered at the start of the 2012/13 campaign the Minstermen’s current position ahead of the first FA Cup encounter he would have accepted it.

City’s gritty share-all at Southend reinforced Mills’ charges in tenth place in npower League Two, firmly on the coat-tails of the play-off pursuers with 22 points amassed from 15 games.

Ahead of their initial foray into the FA Cup at home to AFC Wimbledon on Saturday, a thoroughly thrilled Mills told The Press: “To have still to play our first FA Cup tie of the season and be in the top ten is something worth shouting about.

“We are just a couple of points off the play-offs and within striking range of the automatic places and we have yet to start in the FA Cup – so that’s a fantastic position for us to be in.

“If that had been offered to me before the start of the season I would have taken it.”

Mills was also glad of a midweek break ahead of Saturday’s first round tie explaining how the rare absence of a Tuesday or Wednesday fixture could prove a big bonus.

“The games come thick and fast at this stage of the season, so it is a bit unusual not to have a game in midweek, but after the three hard games we have just come through then it’s not a bad time to have a break.”

With no behind-closed-doors friendly also this week, Mills plumped for giving those squad players who have not figured recently a run-out against the club’s youth team, who are preparing for their own FA Cup youth showdown away to Chester City tomorrow night.

Mills also confirmed that “two players” had been identified as possible recruits should he feel a more pressing need to beef up the Minstermen attack.

Said the City manager: “There are a couple of players we have got an eye on if I feel we need another attacking option.

“Whether we do it or not is something we are talking about.”

In Mills we trust , almost a third of the season gone and in a very healthy position.Glad Mills has identified possible new recruits should we get more injuries .Hope we can do well in the Cup and bring in much needed revenue.I dream of a third round visit to Arsenal Liverpool Man Utd etc but even more I dream of back to back promotion.
Dreams apart keep up the good work Gary.... survival is the aim this season anything else is a bonus!!!!

absolutely, mills is doing a fantastic job...we are a completely different club compared to when he took over. confidence is oozing out of staff, players and supporters alike.

as for the FA Cup, who would everyone like if we did make it to the 3rd round? my preferences are purely for personal/friend reasons but my ideal draw would be Leeds away or Newcastle/Liverpool/
Arsenal at home. would be superb to see players like Ben Arfa/Gerrard/Carzola at Bootham Cresc!

The third round would be great and a trip to Newcastle would be ideal. Any premier at home as well - it will help them shift the 10 game mini season tickets that I understand come out on or around 1st December.

Anyway, last year's trip to Wrexham still haunts me slightly so hopefully GM has learnt not to rotate too much this time!!

Burning with pride??? As much as we've had a cracking 7 days, the recent 0 - 4 Coventry result wasn't long ago. And had we not had some questionable team selections/formation
s, I'd argue that we would be higher up the table (and still in the league cup). Finally, can we drop the 'we were in the conference last season' nonsense as it's a wasted sentiment. The McGills were always committed to getting us back in the league anyway.

There's no pleasing some folk! 12 months ago everyone at the club would have taken our situation as it stands now. Wake up and smell the coffee! In Mills we trust

Think we need to target Round 2 rather than 3! AFC Wimbledon will be no walk in the park and their new manager has got them playing well. That said, the abilities of our current squad and manager, plus our strong FA Cup traditions, esp. at BC, are strong points in our favour. If we do win through to the second round, then a home, all-Yorkshire tie against either Sheffield United, Bradford City, Rotherham United or Doncaster Rovers, would guarantee a near capacity crowd!! COYR.

Well said skilly as you say there's no pleasing some folk-Ok the Coventry game was a disaster but every team has them-and as regards the Mcgills always being comitted to getting City out of the Conference thats very true but I think there is one or two other Clubs committed to getting out of that League many with greater finances then we ever had!-so it was never going to be that easy-and perhaps certain people should appreciate where the Club is at this moment in time!

Putting the 'we were in the conference last season' argument to one side (which I still think is valid by the way, we were only 4th best in that division) how about the fact that we're sitting just outside the play off places, on a limited wage budget compared to a lot of teams in the division, with many of those conference players and only the team top of the division have lost fewer games than us?

I haven't always agreed with team selection, who has? But where we are right now is a fantastic achievement and I'm pretty proud of it. Plus I'm not sure millsy's team selection had any bearing on us going out of the league cup, I thought we were just unlucky at donny.

To all the idiots who made out that the Coventry defeat meant nothing, Bradford have just beaten Premier League Wigan on pens (at Wigan). But as you'd say, it doesn't mean owt! After all, we were in the conference last season. Lol

I am sorry but no matter what round or what team we face we definitely need to be looking for away ties the way we are playing this season!

Coventry put us out of the Johnstone's paint trophy, no wigans in that competition

Apologies, I was trying to highlight the importance of cup competitions. Our 'Mills Out!' banner is at the ready, so we'd better beat Wimbledon on Saturday.

I agree, Capital One and FA Cup competitions are important to clubs like ours, personally I couldn't care less about any others, great day at wembley though it was in may.

I'm pretty confident we'll see a strong team and a victory on Saturday.

Did anyone on this site say the Coventry defeat 'meant nothing'? I don't think so. And, lets be fair, Mills has pulled off a string of pretty good results following that loss - you could even say, in response to that loss. I suppose in your eyes, that's the sign of a poor manager. 'Lol' (!)
