Match report: Newport County 2, York City 1

York City celebrate Paddy McLaughlin’s free-kick equaliser at Newport County York City celebrate Paddy McLaughlin’s free-kick equaliser at Newport County

YORK City’s record-breaking undefeated away run ended at future FA Trophy final opponents Newport County last night.

Paddy McLaughlin’s 13th goal of the season and third in as many games could not prevent the Minstermen losing a Blue Square Bet Premier game on the road for the first time in 14 fixtures – a sequence stretching back to September.

Either side of a belting McLaughlin free-kick, goals by Nat Jarvis and substitute Romone Rose earned the Exiles maximum points and left City unable to claim a third successive away win in eight days on their travels.

It also meant the visitors remain four points behind third-placed Mansfield Town in the fight for play-off positions with one game in hand.

City were forced into three changes from the side that started Friday’s 2-1 win at Luton Town with both centre-backs Chris Doig and Chris Smith missing, as well as 16-goal striker Jason Walker.

Former Wales under-21 international Dan Parslow earned a recall and was made captain for the night in the absence of Smith and Scott Kerr.

Jamal Fyfield also returned at left-back with Ben Gibson shifting into the centre of defence alongside Parslow while, in attack, Matthew Blinkhorn came in for Walker.

City made a comfortable start to the match without really threatening in an attacking sense on the bobbly Spytty Park pitch.

Jon Challinor lifted an early 25-yard shot over the bar following McLaughlin’s pass but that proved the only goal attempt of the opening 22 minutes.

A 30-yard effort by home midfielder Sam Foley then trickled wide of Michael Ingham’s goal.

The first corner of the night was won by the Minstermen on 26 minutes but it came to naught when Blinkhorn was adjudged to have fouled home goalkeeper Karl Darlow.

Newport, though, forged in front following their first flag kick of the night after Parslow had headed a dangerous Elliott Buchanan cross inches wide of Ingham’s right-hand post.

Foley’s subsequent delivery cleared Ingham, leaving Jarvis with the formality of finding the net from two yards out on 33 minutes.

The Minstermen’s response was spirited, however, with the equaliser arriving six minutes later after Lanre Oyebanjo had been chopped down 25 yards from goal by County captain Gary Warren.

He was booked for the offence but McLaughlin meted out even greater punishment when his left-footed thunderbolt of a free-kick whistled past Darlow’s right shoulder.

Newport almost got their noses back in front after hesitancy from Ingham in his own six-yard box presented Ryan Charles with a chance that he could only stab at the City ’keeper.

The visitors finished the half strongest, however, with Jamie Reed’s header from a long Oyebanjo throw deflected wide.

Reed also forced Darlow into a low save from 12 yards seconds before the break.

The first chance of the second half saw Lee Minshull hoist an ambitious 35-yard effort over Ingham’s crossbar, while County ’keeper Darlow survived a 60th-minute scare when he dropped Challinor’s long throw but, with his goal unguarded, team-mate David Pipe blocked Matty Blair’s shot.

But Newport were back in the lead on 70 minutes when Rose turned swiftly just inside City’s 18-yard box and drilled a low shot into Ingham’s bottom right-hand corner.

Shortly afterwards, Blinkhorn sidefooted wide from ten yards after McLaughlin’s shot had been blocked but, despite throwing on Moses Ashikodi and Adriano Moké, the visitors could not force a second equaliser.

First away loss in 14 fixtures - disappointing, but by no means the end of the world. Runs like that can't last forever and Newport are in a relegation battle.

This will prove a nerve wracking end to the season which is what makes football so exciting. Stick behind the team and cheer us on to Wembley.

Yes the players are tired after 3 away games in 7 days but some players on the pitch hadn't played in the previous games.

e.g Matthew Blinkhorn 6/10 - he didn't do anything all night.

We had 5 fresh players on the bench - nearly all midfielders who could have come in to play for the shattered Oyebanjo and Meredith !!??

And still no sign of Pilkington ?

I don't think we can blame tiredness when we have over 20 players in our squad - anyone tired shouldn't have been playing.

Parslow was top draw last night, commanded well and read the game and incoming balls very well.

Fyfield - hmmmm - lack of match fitness maybe ?

Reed - understandably tired after chasing long balls for 3 games in a row !

No team in this league will win every match. Yes-it would have been a massive 3 points but it was not to be probably because of tiredness and injuries. Now is not the time to dwell on it but look forward to the next match v Fleetwood where we will no doubt raise our game.Hopefully a big crowd and Chris Smith and Doig will be back to bolster the defence. I am still confident we will be in the play offs. Come on City!

Newport have under-performed this season after doing quite well last year.
Hopefully we will emulate them by being only the fourth team to beat Fleetwood in the BSP this season!!

Poor game - 500 miles round trip - once again we were beaten by a team playing 'hoof ball' - proved to be more effective than our game. Watching some of the clearances the arch at Wembley could be in danger!!! Ratings 6 - 8 more like 4 - 6 all round. Their defence outclassed our forwards - disappointed to see Reed taken off as I didn't realise he was on the field. We lacked a midfielder to put his foot on the ball (Mr Kerr) and play it on the ground - when we did we looked dangerous - play the short passing game not the 30-40 yarder into no man's land - play like we did next Saturday and that will be a double over us. Minshull, for them was the difference - looked too big for midfield, fat, over weight but won everything.
Why do we stumble to sides like this. Talking before the game to their supporters before the game they believed we would tear them apart after the Luto display - As above what's happened to Pilkington and Brown - and need I mention Potts? True midfielders. Saturday will be tough, we need to be back on our game - we need the three points.
Sorry to see the Luton game was called off - all that way to Gateshead just to turn round and head back, and think about all that petrol!!!!

I dont think that people are being too negative because we lost at Newport. The alarm bells have started ringing thats all. Loyal fans who have supported the team all season now fear that we may not make into the play-offs after all. At the end of the season we will finish up where we deserve to be in the league table. I have supported York City every season since 1955-56. And fans even moaned in those days. And believe me that team would have murdered the current one (regardless of what formation GM played). So we will all have to do what fans have done for years "Hope for the best".

Ok, we got this one all wrong, but let's really get our teeth into this Fleetwood game. They are a horrid little club with no fans and a mass of money. We need to knock them down a few pegs.

Massive game. We need to win this one.

Not at the game, so can't comment about it, but I note a real mood of pessimism in the comments on this story and the previous one. Understandable, as York City has the resources to do much better. GM has been unable to get a pattern of real consistency which translates into winning-runs. If the team shows the character I saw at Luton last Friday, we'll make the play-offs without question. If we fail to finish in the top five, well, for me it's serious questions about GM, whether or not we win the FA Trophy.

You say this despite the fact that several people who were at the game said Parslow was excellent (read the other match-thread), and was the Press man of the match...

having no chris smith was a big blow, not saying that he'd have affected the goals conceded, but from the players' actions on the field and from their tweets - 'smudge' or 'captain marvel' as they call him, is clearly a metaphorically big figure and personality around the club, something I always think the skipper of your team should be.
lets make sure he's had plenty of rest, paracetamol and lemsip and have him fighting fit against the pretty lethal strikeforce of Andy Mangan & Jamie Vardy (not forgetting the others such as Brodie, Seddon & Milligan).
If we put saturday's game into perspective, they haven't lost a league game since October 11th (against Newport, bizarely!) and haven't lost on the road since August 29th when they were beaten at the Racecourse.
A win would be something special, if we put in as much effort and commitment as we did against Crawley this time last year or against Luton in all 4 games this year, I think we can get a result.

Can think of 85 other hardy soles who may be wondering whether this rubbish will be worth £30 at Wembley!
Parslow apart the team were well beaten in all departments and it seems to be too easy for mediocre sides to upset the York passing game.
Need a serious re-think if we are to get out of this league next season because with too many performances like this I suspect promotion will pass us by again.
