Match report: York City 2, Mansfield Town 2
10:14am Monday 2nd January 2012 in Match reports
By Dave Flett, Sports reporter
STUTTERING York City have gone three games without a home win for the first time under Gary Mills.
Following on from the 2-2 FA Trophy draw with Solihull Moors and the 3-2 Blue Square Bet Premier defeat to Kidderminster at Bootham Crescent, Mills’ men needed a stoppage-time equaliser from Jamal Fyfield to share the spoils against Mansfield Town yesterday.
Just as against Solihull, when Jon Challinor pounced at the death, Fyfield’s deft finish spoke volumes for City’s character but the Minstermen will be annoyed to have ushered in the new year by conceding an early goal – a habit that dogged their progress at the tail end of 2011.
Matt Green’s 14th-minute strike meant the Minstermen have conceded in the opening quarter of an hour in four of their last five matches.
When Aman Verma then doubled the visitors’ advantage on 72 minutes with his side’s second and last shot on target, City looked on the brink of registering back-to-back league defeats in front of their own fans.
But, while the Minstermen are developing a reputation for unlikely comebacks, Mansfield’s tendency to throw away leads is well established in 2011/12.
Matty Blair’s 77th-minute goal and Fyfield’s late strike meant the Stags have now drawn eight games from a winning position.
Earlier, the hosts had started with defensive stalwarts David McGurk and Dan Parslow as centre-half partners in a back four for the first time in a league match this season but still fell behind to the first chance of the afternoon.
Liam Henderson, who had just been switched from centre forward to the right flank, failed to track overlapping full back Kieron Freeman.
The on-loan Nottingham Forest left-back then raced on to Lindon Meikle’s pass and his low cross was turned in from five yards by Green.
City’s first opportunity of the match, meanwhile, fell to Henderson on 20 minutes after Paddy McLaughlin’s pass ricocheted favourably to him in the penalty box.
But the off-balance former Watford striker’s shot was at a comfortable height for Stags ’keeper Alan Marriott to tip over.
James Meredith should have then claimed only his second goal in three seasons as a City player but guided the ball past Marriott’s left-hand post from ten yards with only the Mansfield ’keeper to beat.
At the other end, Anthony Howell’s 15-yard effort flashed narrowly wide after Meredith had stopped Green in his tracks.
The injury-plagued McGurk then departed the action with a calf problem with Mills sending on the dropped Fyfield as a replacement.
As the first half drew to a close, Marriott made a routine near-post save from Blair, who was then inches away from converting a Parslow header at the far post following Scott Kerr’s free-kick.
After the interval, McLaughlin’s edge-of-the-box effort failed to unduly trouble Marriott, Parslow headed wide from an Andre Boucaud free-kick and Jamie Reed got his bearings wrong 12 yards from goal after a pass from fellow substitute Danny Pilkington.
Paul Cox’s men were more clinical on the counter attack, however, when Reed lost possession on the edge of the visitors’ 18-yard box.
With City outnumbered at the back, Green’s clever backheel found Verma and he fired powerfully past Michael Ingham from 15 yards despite Parslow’s valiant attempt at a last-ditch tackle.
The Minstermen were back in the game, though, five minutes later when Blair bundled the ball over the line from three yards after Meredith had raided down the left and delivered a dangerous low cross.
On 84 minutes, Blair was crowded out after a purposeful run into the Stags’ penalty box only for the ball to loop into the air and fall to Reed eight yards from goal.
But an alert Marriott charged off his line and, leaping into the air, spread himself well to ultimately keep out Reed’s volley with his left heel.
The one-time Lincoln ’keeper could only watch City’s equaliser float over his head and under the crossbar, however, during the first minute of added-on time.
Fyfield found himself in an excellent position after Parslow had won a header in the visitors’ penalty box and displayed immaculate composure to chip Marriott from eight yards with the outside of his left boot.

He was left completely exposed marking both their centre forwards for the second goal. And his aerial ability, he's the only player in the team who can consistently win headers, created that late equaliser. I for one hope he is now given an extended run at centre back, he was last season's player of the year for heaven's sake. The same comment about match practice applies also to Jamie Reed who is a natural goalscorer and he too should be given an extended run when he will score plenty of goals.
Were you watching the same game as everyone else? Parslow 8 McLaughlin 6 Kerr 7
What a crock of s@*!. McLaughlin and Kerr were streets above everyone else. Who was marking Green for their 1st goal? That would be Parslow who was as committed as ever.

Being serious I guess he's no where near full fitness and Mills is banking on seeing a different player when/if he gets to that point. But I'd still have him behind both Walker and Reed. If we are going to get another striker in on loan I would like to see Mills trying to get a young reserve striker in from a Premier/Championship level club.

Without Walker to attract opposition players making space for others we are going to have to work hard if we insist on conceding early avoidable goals.
Strengthening our play off position is now a must and if as posted Ashikodi has signed a permanent deal it does not fill me with confidence.Matty Blair seems to be our only goal threat at the moment as Hendo and Reedy are not cutting it.Chambers is out of form and Walker still out.I don't know why things have gone wrong lately but our fast flowing football has disappeared altogether, as has our accurate passing.Dave McGurk is normally one of our stalwarts so hope his injury is not serious.I think Fleetwood will pip Wrexham for top spot at the end of the season and I'd rather play Wrexham than Fleetwood if we can stay in the play offs. There has to be a big improvement in our play to achieve this.Come on City
With Moses signed I cannot see a striker coming in (hope GMs eye for a player means he is a gem as we will need additional presence up front) if as is stated elsewhere Mcdermott has signed for Telford then there is room for a loanee just cannot see a decent conference player being available.
A right back/mid field player or CB might just help the balance who to lose as we clearly cannot offer games to all the CBs. Ian foresees Fleetwood going up with hopefully Wrexham losing their way a bit I can see Grimsby coming good, Luton as always & Kiddy provided they can keep their players in January important we stay in touch now until Walker is back & in form & we should look to get Reed + Hendo game sharp in the meantime in a formation with 2 up front with Moses on the bench.
But you know what I am being entertained, I do have faith in GM & these are a good set of players capable of beating any side on a good day is this our year? Possibly but it could be the final part of the transition to a fully chosen GM squad & if they went out for a night out good on them as long as no one did a Gash & Co now back to business Coe on City!!!

But as always there are some quality players around if you have a good eye & GM does have that. Reedy will come good with game time partnered up with Hendo could create chances & of course Moses if trained & fit might give us options.
Amazing we are still so high in league when you look at our pathetic forward line.If Mills doesnt bring in some quality the great early season will be wasted.
Important Walker comes back fully fit, guess that no one will take him for big money injured so its not such a negative. Chambers looks out of sorts currently we will have to be patient there is a methodology to Gms signings no lumbering tanks all players that should be capable of carrying the ball so to me the player most likely not to fit is Smith, given that the TY Parslow combo looks good & Fyfield has his good points. To me it looks like cover for RB LB unless Challinor can decide where his future lies quickly & given McDermott may have gone there is scope to get a body or two in if they are the right type to fit the vision.
I am just unsure that the full scope of players required to combat every team in the conference can be had on our budget. Best City team to watch for ages enjoy the ride!

So this draw is again not the end of the world? We have gone from a possible 2 points off top spot to a possible 16 points and even out of the top five if our opponents when their games in hand. That's because of all these wonderfull draws.

You can't just look at each game in isolation and say not bad. It's amazing how many people who were having a dig at me a few weeks ago for pointing this out are now saying the same thing.

They are absolute garbage and show no reflection of the game.
Your marking system may not please everyone but now they are just becoming embarrassing and reading them has almost become surreal when you constantly award generous marks for players who aren’t playing well. Parslow 8 out of 10? Is he bribing you?
Why will York not get promoted? We not only accept, but openly embrace players of Danny Parslow's ability. Or lack of it. Why are we conceding so many silly goals? Because we have garbage centre backs like Smith and Parslow yet they continue to receive all the plaudits for good performances.
