Match report: York City 3, Barrow 1

Matty Blair stands tall to fend off a Barrow challenge in last night’s Bootham Crescent win Matty Blair stands tall to fend off a Barrow challenge in last night’s Bootham Crescent win

York City continued their 100 per cent start to the season with a 3-1 home victory over Barrow.

First-half goals by former Barrow favourite Jason Walker and Patrick McLaughlin gave the hosts a deserved advantage at the break following an exciting opening period.

Ex-City striker Adam Boyes then pulled a goal back for the Bluebirds but Matty Blair made the points safe in the fifth minute of stoppage time after visiting right-back Kelvin Lomax had been sent off.

The only disappointment on an otherwise excellent night for City was the sight of Walker hobbling out of the action following Boyes’ goal after landing awkwardly from an aerial challenge.

City were unchanged from the side that started and finished Saturday’s 2-1 victory at Ebbsfleet with Scott Kerr and David McDermott still sidelined.

The injury-plagued visitors, who were only able to name four substitutes, included Boyes and another former Minsterman Andy Ferrell in their side while evergreen 43-year-old Darren Sheridan – the joint-player manager – also lined up in midfield.

City were positive from the first whistle with Walker, who was central to all the hosts’ attacking moves in the opening 45 minutes, forcing the first save after just 37 seconds.

The 27-year-old forward displayed excellent anticipation to capitalise on Phil Bolland’s weak header back to Danny Hurst but his low shot was kept out by the Cumbrians’ goalkeeper.

A smart free-kick routine then ended with Walker firing a deflected 25-yard shot wide and, from the subsequent seventh-minute corner, the Minstermen forged ahead through another intelligently-worked set-piece.

McLaughlin’s flag-kick to the near post was expertly guided with one touch into Ashley Chambers’ path by Walker.

The former Leicester winger then made space for a low 15-yard drive which cannoned back off Hurst’s right-hand post with Walker pouncing from six yards despite the Barrow ’keeper getting his body in the way of his attempt.

Walker, overflowing with confidence, teased a backtracking Bolland on 12 minutes before trying an audacious 15-yard chip that drifted narrowly wide.

Another ambitous 30-yard drive by Walker flashed narrowly wide moments later before the former Bluebird sent the hard-working Blair clear through with one touch after a drop ball.

Blair, though, sidefooted wide with only Hurst to beat and, on 20 minutes, completely mis-kicked eight yards out after Walker had tricked his way to the byline.

Barrow reminded City how slender a one-goal lead whatever any team’s level of dominance when Boyes dispossessed Chris Smith on the edge of the home box and Ferrell forced a near-post parry from Michael Ingham.

Paul Rutherford also called Ingham into action on 37 minutes after Louis Almond had charged at the City defence on the counter.

On 44 minutes, Adam Quinn was fortunate to escape with only a yellow card after clattering through the back of Walker on the halfway line but justice was perhaps done in first-half stoppage time when McLaughlin netted an overdue second goal.

Chambers found an overlapping James Meredith charging down the left flank and his cross was controlled by McLaughlin who found Hurst’s bottom left-hand corner from 12 yards on the turn.

Following a familiar first-half theme, Sheridan was cautioned little more than two minutes after the restart having flattened Walker from behind.

The second-half tempo unsurprisingly dropped but Adriano Moké, still making energetic bursts forward, curled over from the edge of the box on the hour mark.

Walker also tested Hurst from 20 yards after more tireless running by Blair before Boyes put a towering header into Ingham’s top left-hand corner in the 81st-minute.

Barrow then lost Lomax after he kicked the ball at City substitute Jamie Reed and Blair grabbed himself a deserved goal, sidefooting in from six yards after good work from Michael Potts.

Great game last night!!! Barrow were better than I thought they were going to be but another assured performance from city, with the vocal backing from the shippo! Walker worked hard for the team and Blair had a great game, he left the barrow right back standing at one point!

The only concern for me is that when the tempo dropped around the half hour mark, chris smith and mcgurk decided every time we got the ball, instead of playing the football we can, to hoof the ball up straight to their keeper. Moke and boucs also need to release it a bit earlier than they did, they were messing around with it in our own area, but overall, looking good for rest of the season if we carry on as we played yesterday. Roll on saturday!!!

oh yeah, does anyone know if walker's injury serious, looked like a twisted knee or something!??

Great game last night!

Fantastic performance by the whole team, great support, big crowd, just what we need!
Walker works tirelessly for the team and moke looks something else.
Only concern is chris smith and mc gurk deciding that when the pace dropped and barrow strung together a few passes, that the best option was to smash the ball downfield to their keeper instead of playing it out like we did succesfully when on top. just a little issue mills has to adress. apart from that great performance, deserved the 3 points, credit to barrow, they played some good football at times, and put up a good fight, literally! If we play like that every game we will be near enough impossible to beat, cant wait for telford already,

Roll on saturday!!!

and does anyone know how bad walker injury is? went down funny, looked like a twisted knee? ouch!

Thats a pretty optimistic / positive statement. Nice one - glad you're coming round!

Agree with comments about McGurk and Smith. But overall a great performance and really entertaining game. Will be interesting to see if we can sustain the performance against the better teams in the Div.

Great result and crowd.Thought Quinn should have gone for tackle on Walker but pleased team kept discipline despite some rough tactics by Barrow who weren't a bad side really when they tried to play on the floor. Old boys Ferrell and Boyes haunted us a little and Boyes scored a good goal but we must start keeping clean sheets. Jason Walker gave then trouble from the start and deserved Man of the Match. Ingham made some good saves but had little chance with Boyes well directed header in the top corner.McLaughlin is skilful, works hard and with Moke and Boucard had a good game together with Blair. This is an exciting City team, good to watch and value for money but this is only the start of the season and still a long way to go as Gary Mills will realise. I am confident he will keep the side motivated to the end when hopefully we get out of this League without having to go to Wembley again. We are a very strong squad when you see the quality on last night's bench.
Keep the faith and lets hope the crowd numbers increase as they did last night. Code words " easy-week"!!don't think so.

Good result last night although it got a bit tense after they scored as we tended to sit back and let them come on us far too much! We need to get rid of that habit and play the way we can to go and get that next goal. Brilliant game by Walker and Blair. Would have liked to see Reedy on a bit sooner as Chambers was looking tired and a bit lost. Nevertheless a brilliant first home game, great attendance and three well worked goals! On the City!

I didn’t get to any of the pre-season games but it is apparent from the “real” matches that (at least against lesser teams) our pace going forward is going to cause problems for our opponents.
I’m not sure that last night was a true indication of how our midfield ranks against the rest but speed of movement is causing some havoc and will continue to draw yellow cards and worse for our opponents.
Hopefully Walker’s injury will be short lived, because without his hold up play, and without Kerr’s protection, we look a little vulnerable to quick turnover of possession.

Nevertheless, the stamina, speed, and attitude on show augur well.

It looks likely that I’ll be needing to eat my words regarding my previous accusations of negativity from Mills – it certainly won’t give me indigestion having to swallow my pride and apologise for my doubts. Aklso if the entertainment continues at this level we should also enjoy continued growing support at home.

As we lead up to the first “six pointer” the fixtures appear to be giving us a progressive increase in difficulty; but there’s no reason why we shouldn’t arrive at Fleetwood with a good degree of confidence. Still early days, and we shouldn’t go overboard, but – more of the same on Saturday please!

The only down-side for me was when we went stale in the second half - I wanted the Manager to make some changes earlier, to freshen the team up. Moke had a good game but he was one of the first to start giving the ball away as he tired, Chambers was also wasting a lot of balls. And Walker was being kicked off the park by his so-called "old mates". Of course the Manager decides who goes on or off, but I just felt that sticking with the starting formation too long, this allowed Barrow to get back into the game. For me the man of the match was Matty Blair, what a good signing he looks to be.

I'm glad that Walker kept his word and didn't celebrate too much when he scored. It would have been a shame to upset those THUGS in blue shirts any more. Other than that a thoroughly enjoyable performance and a great result with Blair, Moke, Mc Laughlin and Walker all putting in top class performances, more of the same on saturday please and hopefully we can be sitting top going to Fleetwood. My one worry is for Walker if he doesn't get some protection from these dreadful officials at this level.

One stand out for me was over 3000 for the first midweek game of the season. For me that shows the excitement there is in this Mills team. I don't remember us getting over 3000 for a midweek game this early for many years, word has obviously got around. It would be nice to see us averaging over 3000 this season, a real boost to the club. Just shows talking up a club with such enthusiasm actually can pay dividends.

Hi Duffy, couldn't agree more. I was there and the buzz was terrific. Word is definitely spreading about this team and rightly so. I was one of many that has been banging on about getting down to BC from the start. This was Barrow, but the buzz is going to be immense when we play the likes of Grimsby, Lincoln, Fleetwood, et al. I confess to be feeling completely obsessed about how City are going to do this season and really feeling good.

I'm just the same. I already have some of my return rail tickets booked from Glasgow for upcoming games.

Great start for York City. Well done to the players but especially to Gary Mills. Pre-season results don't matter but getting a new group of players to play well together does. Mills has obviously done a good job of that.

The opening stretch of games looks relatively easy on paper (with the exception of Fleetwood away) so if good results can be continued the team could enter the more difficult stretch that begins a month today with a lot of confidence and the chance of establishing themselves near the top of the division. Well done everyone, including the fans for turning up in large numbers!
