FORMER York City winger Adam Smith showed supporters around his flat in last night’s Mansfield Town matchday programme.

He then found his old club just as hospitable during a crushing 5-0 home win.

Smith opened the scoring in spectacular fashion following slack play by City right-back Duane Courtney, with Rob Duffy, Paul Connor, Kyle Nix and Luke Medley also on target for the rampant Stags.

After the game, City manager Martin Foyle informed The Press that he would not be commenting on the performance.

Jonathan Smith’s 34th-minute minute red card for two bookable offences did not help the Minstermen’s cause but, in truth, the trailing visitors had struggled to gain a foothold in the match prior to his dismissal and only managed their first goal attempt on the stroke of half-time.

Foyle made one change to the side that started Saturday’s 2-0 home win against Hayes and Yeading.

New signing Danny Racchi dropped to the bench as Jonathan Smith earned a recall in the centre of midfield alongside Neil Barrett, with Alex Lawless filling a deep-lying role.

Smith wasted no time in making his presence felt with two late challenges on Nix within the first ten minutes – the second earning him a yellow card.

Moments later, home striker Connor rattled Michael Ingham’s right-hand post after a fierce shot on the turn from 12 yards.

Ingham was also called into action on the quarter-hour mark, saving low to his left to keep out Gary Mills’ 30-yard drive.

The Stags then took the lead on 22 minutes when Adam Smith shrugged off the attentions of Courtney before cutting in from the left flank and producing an emphatic finish across Ingham into the helpless City ’keeper’s top corner. Adam Smith left Courtney trailing in his wake again just seconds after the restart but, on this occasion, Lawless made a timely interception.

City namesake Jonathan Smith then saw his evening end prematurely when he tugged the sleeve of serial victim Nix on the half-way line and was a little harshly pointed in the direction of the changing rooms by Lancashire referee Lee Metcalfe.

As a result, Michael Rankine was left to plough a lone furrow in attack with Leon Constantine moving on to the right flank.

Kevin Sandwith drove across the face of goal for the Stags on 40 minutes and also saw a 30-yard free-kick deflect wide off the Minstermen’s defensive wall.

The visitors eventually mustered a shot on goal in the 44th minute when Barrett volleyed wide from the edge of the box after a Lawless free-kick was cleared by a stout Mansfield defence.

Barrett also sliced wide with another 20-yard effort in first-half stoppage time.

The visitors started the second half by keeping possession masterfully but fell further behind following Mansfield’s first attack after the interval on 54 minutes.

Duffy capitalised on hesitancy from Ingham to reach Steven Istead’s low right-wing cross first and guided the ball in from six yards out.

At the other end, Lawless’ free-kick from the right to the far post was headed back to the penalty spot by substitute Michael Gash, but centre-back Daniel Parslow completely miskicked in front of an inviting net. Within seconds, the home side had broken up field to add a third goal on 64 minutes.

Smith’s 25-yard drive was beaten out by Ingham but Connor was on hand to tap in from six yards.

Mansfield refused to relent against City’s ten men with Nix going close from 25 yards before extending the hosts’ lead, swapping passes with Medley before curling an edge-of-the-box effort beyond Ingham’s dive to his left.

The City ’keeper then needed to be alert to tip over a rising Louis Briscoe drive. James Meredith and David McDermott both went close for the Minstermen but could not find the target before Medley burst past David McGurk and fired low past Ingham to complete the rout in the second minute of stoppage time.
