REMEMBRANCE Day might have been commemorated at Bootham Crescent on Saturday, but hostilities will now resume between York City and AFC Wimbledon a week tomorrow.

City battled out a 1-1 draw with the Dons during Saturday’s FA Cup first round tie and will now attempt to progress to the next stage of the world-famous competition for the first time since 2010.

Russ Wilcox’s men would have already secured their passage into the second round, however, had it not been for a sensational double save by Wombles keeper James Shea.

The visitors’ shot-stopper reacted brilliantly to keep out 84th-minute efforts from Wes Fletcher and Michael Coulson.

His defensive team-mates then helped out to smother a third attempt by Fletcher during an extraordinary goalmouth scramble.

Recalled striker Jake Hyde had earlier given City an eighth-minute lead but the Dons drew level midway through the first period after a sloppily-conceded Andy Frampton goal.

The hosts then failed to score a second goal – something they have only achieved in three of their 19 fixtures this term – as the team’s run without a home triumph stretched to an 11th game.

Hyde opened the scoring after climbing high above Wimbledon centre-back Adam Barrett to meet Femi Ilesanmi’s searching cross into the penalty box.

Visiting left-back Jack Smith then tumbled over Deon Burton after the former Jamaican international slipped as both players chased the loose ball.

As a consequence, Michael Coulson gained possession in the inside right channel and his firmly-driven, low delivery was directed into the goal from four yards by an alert Hyde.

Lindon Meikle went on to drive over from 15 yards after cutting in from the right before a careless clearance by Ilesanmi precipitated the chain of events that led to the 21st-minute equaliser.

Following Ilesanmi’s sliced mistake, Ade Azeez broke through on Michael Ingham’s goal, with the City keeper reacting well to save low to his left.

But the Dons were not to be denied from the resulting corner.

George Francombe sent in a low centre from the right and, after Ingham parried an initial Sean Rigg attempt from six yards, centre-back Frampton followed up to net from the same distance.

A block by John McCombe then denied Azeez as he threatened again with the City defender hobbling out of the action shortly afterwards.

But Coulson’s well-struck free-kick was pushed over his crossbar by Shea, debutant Stephane Zubar, on for the injured McCombe, had a chance kept out at the far post and Burton headed too high following persistent play down the left by Hyde.

At the other end, Ingham smothered a long-range Frankie Sutherland strike in first-half stoppage time.

There were fewer chances in a more sedate second half before the frantic passage of play that led to Shea’s heroics.

Otherwise, Adebayo Akinfenwa somehow sidefooted wide from four yards after beating Marvin McCoy to a right-wing Francombe cross and Rigg also missed the target with three hopeful shots from distance.

For City, an unmarked Hyde headed wide from Coulson’s corner and Meikle blazed wastefully over from the edge of the box.

But the tie should have been settled when Hyde sent in a cross from the right and substitute Fletcher’s header was clawed away by Shea.

Coulson, following up, went on to see his point-blank drive saved by the feet of the grounded ex-Arsenal youth-team net-minder and a third opportunity for Fletcher was also prevented from crossing the line by Dons defenders.

Having bowed out of the Cup following first round replays in each of the last two campaigns, the Minstermen will now be looking to avoid an unwanted hat-trick when the teams reconvene at Kingsmeadow next week.
