Embarrassed to be English

AS REGULAR readers of my column will not be surprised to learn, I am so angry about the appointment of Fabio Capello as the new England manager.

I see him as the easy, short-term option and, call me a little Englander, but I feel the national team should be about national pride.

Even FIFA president Sepp Blatter, who can be an arrogant so-and-so, is looking down his nose at us now and said he doesn't think it's right and that it would not happen in France, Germany or Italy.

He's right on this occasion and I'm sure the likes of Alf Ramsey and Brian Clough would be spinning in their graves and it's a shame they are not around now to share their thoughts.

I also can't understand why we have to pay three times as much in wages than any other country and I'm an embarrassed Englishman.

It's galling that Capello will be bringing four other Italian coaches in to work with him. His appointment would still have left a sour taste in my mouth but I could have accepted it more if the FA were putting something in place in terms of grooming possible English successors, who could work alongside him.

I certainly won't be watching England now and even if they win the World Cup in 2010 it won't mean anything to me.

In the Premier League, meanwhile, I watched both big games at the weekend between Liverpool and Manchester United and Arsenal and Chelsea and they were just what you would expect - crash, bang, wallop stuff played at 100 mph with tempers frayed. I think Manchester United came out of the weekend looking the team to beat however.

Arsenal are very pretty but United look the better team and have more experience. Arsenal are also more volatile and I think Cesc Fabregas is getting away with murder at the moment.

He over-reacted to get John Terry booked and then got involved with Ashley Cole. He's doing that a lot now and you can only be classed as an exuberant kid for so long.

I think he will be making the long walk a few times soon if he carries on in that manner.

Closer to home, I was pleased to see York City equal the club record of five consecutive away wins at the weekend and hope they go on and beat it at Stafford on Saturday.

I came into the 1983/84 side that also achieved that feat and it was a very, very good team so if they have equalled that record it's great because people were writing them off just two or three weeks ago.

I'm delighted they have started to pick up.

Football is all in the mind and a couple of wins can make you a totally different team.

If they can do it at home as well, it could create a really good vibe at KitKat Crescent because there was a party atmosphere every time that 1984 side played at home and that was like a goal start for us.

At home the onus is on you to win and to play in a particular way though and that's why I think the three at the back system is proving successful in away games for Colin Walker at the moment.

When I was Hartlepool manager I was always looking for three really solid centre halves and two good full backs to play that system away from home because you can keep it tight, frustrate the opposition and look to nick something.

At home, your full-backs need to play more like wingers otherwise it can look very negative.

Some managers swear by it though, home and away. Brian Little, for example, always plays that way.

Finally, I would like to wish all The Press readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

"it would not happen in France, Germany or Italy."

Is this the same France whose player are almost exclusively immigrants from Morocco, Senegal etc and Germany who have a number of Turkish players in their set up? Lucky it's just us then Keith!

Having no knowledge about footbal whatsoever and no interest doesn't it seem that for a team or whatever to succed then the best man to for the job should be employed? As there have been no significant results for years I think it is about time some one had the guts to employ whoever they think best and put some discipline and hunter killer instinct into a downtrodden overpaid set of "men" that ponce about trying to kick a ball between two posts. Also I think if these are the best we can offer, then those that take penalties and it goes nowhere near the goal should be fined a months wages because I know if I did my job as badly as some of them I would get fired.Surely it can't be that difficult to kick a small ball between two posts from however far way they are. Duh! Time they got their act together and palyed as proffessionals and not as six year olds in the park

Embarrassed to be English

If I were you I'd be more embarrassed by putting my photo next to this utter tripe of a column.

I think Cesc Fabregas is getting away with murder at the moment.

Over looking John Terrys horrific follow through that had no other intention than causing injury and his subsequent berrating of the referee, Coles constant fouling and the humiliation Fabregas gave the Chelsea midfield, your probably right about him, murder. I have never liked JT and that incident just proves the point that his game is based on violence and intimidation. He has no pace and his distribution is average at best. Mourinho was right to question his form over the last few months. It stinks. He is a relic of the eighties, compare him with Ferdinand/Campbell/K
ing, genuine ball playing centre backs, and he looks basic. A player he is not.
As for Capello, the only question of this appointment is who else? Coppell? Curbishley? Redknapp? Hardly a whos who of coaching talent. Perhaps Venables, maybe he would play the lower league 3 at the back formation Keith is so fond of. As England did in Croatia. Hardly a compelling argument made for it in Zagreb.
Capello wanted the Job and hes not Mclaren, for that we can be thankful. Maybe we will develop an English coach/manager of sufficient ability to do the job but looking around there aren't too many names that stand out.

Keith's sentiments are correct in that we would all surely prefer an English manager, but the FA's choice shouldn't make him embarrassed to be an Englishman. It is only embarrassing that Mr Barwick and his cronies are our appointed decision makers. What a shower ! Out of interest, who did appoint thwm and what qualifications do they have?

I would prefer Mike Bassett! at least he considered York City players in his line up.
Seriously Keith the day teams started importing players from overseas was the day the game that your talking about died. How many players end up playing for there country jsut because there grandparents were born there? It really dosent matter who coaches or who plays as long as the games are played in the right spirit and WE WIN

Do something in the world cup? Do me a favour, England will do well to qualify. While clubs continue to put short term gain ahead of long term sustainability, the national team will continue to decline. Not enough young English players are getting games every week, and no matter how good the manager, he can't do his work if the tools are rubbish. As long as the primadonnas who populate the premier league continue to believe their own publicitym the less chance England have of ever being competitive again.
