RENOWNED for one of the best-ever nicknames in football, Norman ‘Bite Yer Legs’ Hunter used his famous gnashers to endorse Minstermen Munchies.

Leeds United legend Hunter sampled City’s new club snack – a 175-gram bag of cheese nacho tortilla chips – when he was booked as a last-minute replacement for an ill Nobby Stiles at Wednesday night’s superb Sportsman’s Dinner.

City have been chosen by Club Snacks to sell their product, which should prove popular with Bootham Crescent supporters and not only because of their taste.

The packaging also features the current kit and club crest with the back of the packet including the names of one of four famous teams from the club’s past.

Those sides selected to appear on the packs are the recent 2012 promotion-winning side, the 1995 team who beat Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford, the 1983/84 championship players who achieved a record 101 League points and City’s famous Happy Wanderers’ FA Cup semi-finalists from 1955.

The nachos will go on sale in the catering kiosks at next Saturday’s home match with Rochdale and will cost £2 with 20p from every purchase going towards the club’s training ground improvements fund.

Minstermen Munchies will also be sold at various outlets in York, including pubs, clubs and some of the major tourist attractions.

On the new venture, Club Snacks director Tim Holloway said: “York City are the first team to have their own branded tortilla chip and we are excited to be working with them. We are hoping City fans will really enjoy this product, which is a high-quality snack made in the North of England.

“We are sure the legendary teams on the back of the packs will bring back great memories for many people in York.”

City boss Nigel Worthington also added his enthusiasm for Minstermen Munchies after sampling them at the York Racecourse dinner.

He said: “It’s a really good product and a fun snack. I can see fans wanting to collect all four legendary teams and, for me, it’s also great that 20p from every sale goes into our training ground fund to assist with the further improvements we have planned.”

If the City chief and ‘Bite Yer Legs’ like them, who are we to argue?

Hunter proved an excellent stand-in for 1966 World Cup winner Stiles in the Ebor Suite with his amusing anecdotes from the 1970s. Fellow guest speakers Mark Crossley and John Stiles were equally entertaining.

Former Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Crossley had some fascinating Brian Clough stories to tell and delivered them with wit and colour.

Stiles, meanwhile, illustrated why he is currently deemed one of the best comedians on the after-dinner circuit with a brilliant stand-up routine.

In total, more than £5,000 was raised from the night, including more than £1,000 from a raffle.

Auction items also proved popular with signed Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo shirts fetching £550 and £500 respectively, while 20 people paid £50 each for autographed montages of Nobby Stiles.

The money will be donated to the club’s training ground improvements fund with City’s recently-appointed commercial consultant Alan Stevenson pleased with the night’s success.

He said: “It was a good night and set the ball rolling in terms of what we want to do at the club. We had a good audience, the speakers were good and it was a nice meal, so it was all encouraging.

“Hopefully, if everybody had a good night, they will tell others about it because these dinners are the sort of things we can put on at a new stadium and it all brings money into the club.

“Next, we should be announcing details of an end-of-the-season Player of the Year presentation dinner some time in the New Year.”
