York City boss Martin Foyle delcares: no 'fringe players' in squad

MARTIN FOYLE today declared every member of his 21-man squad is in the reckoning for the big Blue Square Premier run-in – as York City prepare for a vital league clash at Histon tonight (7.45pm).

The Minstermen boss has had the chance to run the rule over his armoury in the FA Trophy wins over Newport and Corby and, with his side now preparing to push for promotion, Foyle reckons he is ideally placed.

He has picked 19 players in the last three matches with only ineligible new signing Courtney Pitt and Andy McWilliams failing to feature in the starting 11 or off the bench.

Foyle said he took “a little bit personally” the suggestion that any members of his squad could be classed as “fringe players”, arguing all could do a job when required.

“We are trying to keep the group together and they all want to play a part in the success,” Foyle said. “They have all done very well. The fitness levels are very high. We knew they would probably tire against Corby.

“It has given us food for thought. What has been more pleasing is their attitude. They want to get into the starting 11. I have got a fantastic group of players – 21 players – and they will all get a chance in the starting 11.

“People say ‘you are playing fringe players’, I take that a little bit personally. They have all been signed on and they can all do a job.”

Foyle said he has targeted a minimum four-point return from tonight’s trip and Saturday’s visit to Kettering as City continue to try to put pressure on Oxford and Stevenage at the top.

As for the Trophy, the City boss reckons his side have been handed a good draw but said they won’t be taking anything for granted on their journey north.

“We’ve kept away from the big guns, Oxford and Stevenage, and we have a good possibility to go through,” he added. “But any team who get to a quarter-final deserve respect.

“Gateshead are a decent side, they’ve had some problems, and Barrow are the same.”

City have now rescheduled their home clash with Salisbury in the Blue Square Premier for Tuesday, March 9 (7.45pm).

They will also host Guisborough in the North Riding Senior Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday, February 16 (7.30pm).
