York City sign Jamie Clarke and Andy Ferrell joins Gateshead

VERSATILE midfielder Jamie Clarke will bring “a bit of everything” to York City, says manager Martin Foyle.

The 6ft 2in tall Sunderland-born player joined the Minstermen from Grimsby Town ahead of yesterday’s transfer deadline and has agreed terms at Bootham Crescent until the end of the season.

In a busy day of action, midfielder Andy Ferrell was transferred to Gateshead, with Foyle saying he had gone to the International Stadium for a “token” fee, while teenager Michael Emmerson left by mutual consent.

Clarke, who has previously turned out for Rochdale, Boston and Mansfield, was released by Grimsby having played 15 times for the Coca-Cola League Two strugglers this season.

He made 89 appearances in total, scoring four goals, and Foyle was delighted to have captured him.

“He’s got a bit of everything and the most important thing is versatility,” he said. “He can play across the midfield as well as dropping into the back four.

“He’s a physical presence and I am delighted to have him on board. He knows he is going to have to fight for a place and this is fantastic. We play midweek all the way through and we are going to need everything and everybody.”

Foyle revealed Ferrell had asked to leave Bootham Crescent with a better contract on the table from Gateshead proving the catalyst to his return to Tyneside on an initial one-and-a-half year deal.

The former Newcastle United trainee made 30 appearances for City and scored the winning penalty during Saturday’s FA Trophy third round win over Corby.

But, after a regular stint on the left-wing at the start of the season, Ferrell has been restricted to appearing largely from the bench in the last couple of months.

Foyle added: “Gateshead came in for him and Fez asked me to go. It was a much better contract than he was on at York. Fez is a fantastic lad and I didn’t really want to stand in his way. They paid peanuts. It was a token gesture.”

Emmerson, meanwhile, is set to sign for Norton and Stockton Ancients in the Northern League.

Having come through City’s youth set-up, the 19-year-old has been on loan at Billingham Town and Ossett Albion, but has not been able to force his way into Foyle’s plans.

Foyle said: “He’s got the opportunity to go somewhere else and we have released him from his contract. He’s a fantastic lad with a great attitude, but I need to push on with one or two other youngsters.”

Yes he always gave 101% and it is a surprise but he`s a Geordie so I suppose it`s a good move for him and he`ll probably play every week.
Good luck to the lad!

Sorry to see Ferrell leave as many fans think he should have played more than he did. I do not know much about Clarke but being released by Grimsby doesnt exactly raise his profile, but he has to be given a chance.

I have a lot of time for Fez but he did have a poor game against corby and looked a little off the pace.

Its excellent business to get a fee and its always good to get a big unit in as a replacement.

Foyle must have one heck of a long contact list in his mobile!

That cross and Gash's finish turned our season round. A genuine player -I wonder if the move is a sign that Foyle has his players' interests at heart. A reward for his (Ferrell's)professio
nalism.
At least Brodes will have someone to share a lift with if the new lad is from Sunderland.

We now just need to maximise the return from Brodie's loyalty.

Not totaly surprised Fez has gone. He obviously wanted more 1st team games and he just isn't going to get them yet. But he is a decent player and one who I have admired even before coming to York.

Good luck to the lad who I thought would have been a good un in the centre of midfield myself, but Martin has shown he wasn't going to command a place over a combination of two from Lawless/Barratt/Mack
in in the centre.

I know sod all about Clarke.

Probably a bench-warmer coming in, but it's also a bench-warmer going out.

I love Fez, I'd wanted him at York for about 3 years. But, in the final analysis, he just couldn't get in the starting XI, and he wanted first-team action. He wasn't positionally disciplined enough for the left ahead of Carruthers, positionally/mentall
y disciplined enough for the defensive midfield role ahead of Mackin, and not good enough going forward for the advanced midfield role of Lawless/Barrett.

Add to that the concerns over his stamina (when he started, he always faded in the second half), and his propensity for diving recklessly into tackles, and that's about it.

Don't really know Clarke. I think he's mainly played right-back and centre-mid. Some Grimsby fans rate him in the anchoring role, others don't rate him at all. But I doubt he's here to start matches. It's squad cover with letting Fez leave.

I think Imp is spot on in his analysis of Andy Ferrell. I am sad to see him go, but he wasn't going to command a regular first team place. He was very poor (apart from his penalty) against Corby.

The main things is that Brodie is still with us. We have looked bereft of ideas up front without him.

Fully agree. For me, the window was about keeping Brodie.
With him, automatic promotion is a possibility.
Without him, I'd have serious doubts about even securing a play-off place.

Now he just has to stay fit and suspension-free...

Apparently this is because they are looking at some of the current 2nd years with a view to next season, presumably the likes of Lisles, Duckworth, Hopcutt and Wetherald.
Means Emmerson has no future beyond this summer at York.

OLD - HEAD, YORK says...

It has certainly done Clarke some good joining York City, for he has now grown to 6ft 2ins tall according to the Press. Yet the Grimsby Town web-site has him at 5ft 11ins. When he scores his first goal, he could become our first 7ft player!. Seriously now -interesting to read that Gateshead gave Ferrell a much improved offer, so nobody can object to him going back to his roots to get regular football.

old_school_minsterman, york says...

Ferrell was a good trier but very poor with the ball at his feet. Always ran around and gave 100% but wasnt ever really good enough. To be brutal, if York are to go on to bigger and better things they need more talented players than Fez running around like a headless chicken!

I do believe 6'1" or 6'2" is correct.
"187 cm" I'm told.
|
When we signed Gash, depending where you looked, his height varied from 5'9" to 6'4".
And McGurk has been reported at different times in his City career from 5'11" to 6'3".

Most of the time, these figures are just guesses.
