YORK City have signed Australian striker Daniel McBreen following his release by St Johnstone.

The 31-year-old forward, who spent a month on loan with the Minstermen from Scunthorpe last season, has become KitKat Crescent chief Colin Walker's sixth - and final - signing of the summer.

Walker also confirmed that McBreen was one of a small band of strikers he has targeted over the close season, including fellow City old boy Clayton Donaldson, ex-Kidderminster striker Justin Richards and Huddersfield's Luke Beckett.

McBreen scored against Stafford Rangers and Farsley Celtic during five appearances for City last October and November.

Then manager Billy McEwan wanted to extend the 6ft 1in target-man's loan period but Scunthorpe recalled him and he later joined Scottish first division outfit St Johnstone during the January transfer window.

He played seven matches for the Saints and scored during extra time in April's Scottish Cup semi-final against Rangers at Hampden Park only for Nacho Novo to equalise before the Glasgow giants went on to win 4-3 on penalties.

His stint with Saints was hampered by a knee injury and he struggled with a hamstring problem during the first of two seasons with Scunthorpe but Walker is looking forward to the qualities he will bring to the team.

The City boss said: "I had a shortlist of strikers and Daniel was high on it. Luke Beckett was as well and we also spoke to Clayton Donaldson and Justin Richards.

"Justin and Clayton did show an interest but there's only so much money we can spend and we've done fantastically to get Dan so I thank the board for allowing me to bring him here.

"He will bring professionalism and is a fantastic player to have in your dressing room.

"He's got an Australian spirit - he's mentally tough and has a winning mentality.

"He's got bags and bags of experience and I'm looking forward to working with him.

"He will be a favourite with the crowd because of his personality and the fact that he gives it his all on the pitch all the time."

McBreen is Walker's fourth 6ft-plus signing of the summer following the acquisitions of Michael Ingham (6ft 4in), Steven Hogg (6ft 3in) and Mark Greaves (6ft 1in), giving the Minstermen a greater aerial and physical presence than last season when the team's frailties were exposed at defensive set-pieces.

Walker added: "I'm a coach who believes in playing football but in this league you need people who can compete as well.

"You have to match teams physically and mentally and Dan falls into that bracket."

The former Falkirk forward's arrival will give Walker several options in attack where Craig Farrell, Onome Sodje, Richard Brodie and Martyn Woolford will contest starting places.

The City boss said: "Like other areas in the team, there will be competition in the front line which should enable us to play in different ways."

Walker also added that KitKat Crescent would not be besieged by trialists in contrast to previous pre-season campaigns with City's summer shopping, which also included the additions of Ben Wilkinson and Niall Henderson, now complete.

He said: "I wanted to get between four and eight new players and I've got exactly that. We've got a squad of 21 and there will be no trialists.

"I always had a plan to get everybody in so we can work with them from the very beginning of pre-season training next Wednesday."

According to Colin Walker, he's the "final piece of the jig-saw". I think it's a spot-on signing, and we have to look at him as a league 1 quality player, given the lack of appearances for Championship Scunthorpe last year. But, is he the final answer? Not sure. Surely the right side still needs to be addressed. Rusk hasn't proved himself an automatic starter, and Greaves will not hold out as our only defensive midfielder. A crucial piece in the jigsaw, but surely not the final?

It's a potentially good signing, although I still have the same concerns as when he was originally mooted; namely his injury record.

He's going to be a costly player in terms of his contract and if he doesn't stay fit then that's a big problem.

So could be good, but still an element of a gamble. It doesn't surprise me that he wasn't Colin's first choice and I'd probably have had one of those other three ahead of him too (although I'd question Clayton's motivation at this point).

Given the 532 system we use, I don't think the right-hand side will be regarded as an issue. Purkiss first choice, Rusk as cover.

In central midfield, we have 7 for 3 spots (if we include Greaves, Beadle and Rusk there), so I don't think we can carry more bodies.

I think, for the shape we are using, that's probably enough now.
I'd have a young, keen (cheap) right-winger if available to give a Plan B, but doubt we'll see that given Duncum has chosen to go elsewhere.

Fantastic signing, will no doubt bring on Brodie and Sodje during the coming season (Just as i hoped LFW would!)

At BSP level Daniel will really push to be top scorer in the league this year, of that i'm sure.

Final piece in jigsaw ?? Yeah probably spot on given the fact we have so, so many versatile players. Confident of a good year and higher league pos, but after the confidence we had this time last year we'll see what happens !

Well done col for pulling off what everyone (inc myself) thought would not happen. Not a cheap option because there are loads of unemployed cheaper options out there so this must show that the board has ambition. We needed a big strong experianced striker and now we have got one who at 31 is not over the hill. He did bril for us before and was wanted by us the fans,he will no doubt help bring on our young strikers again. Hopefully happy days are ahead.

Providing the injury gods are kind, this is a top, top signing, hats off to all involved at bringing him back to City! He was on most fans lists on who we'd like to see signed for next season, but I think we all quietly agreed it probably wasn't a realistic option, so to do so is superb and the team for next season immediately looks a hell of a lot stronger.

Afterall he was wanted all a long but it was never cut and dried deal and if truefull we had all given up on the idea.

I would like to take this opportunity to eat my proverbial hat and humble pie supper. I said that there was no chance McBreen would come back, and people should just get over it- shows what I know!
Perhaps Big C spent his summer over in Oz, rather than Brid or wherever it was he said he was going!

For a moment then, I'd thought City had signed the God Ronaldo.

He fell over the other day at Manchester airport. Spent half an hour complaining that the escalator had fouled him. Not another whiging temperamental highly strung latin type then?

This is an excellent signing, and hopefully a full pre-season will allow him to get rid of any injury niggles. Looking forward to the season as the majority of our signings have been playing at a higher level than the Conference, and will bring some quality to the team. One point to note, Col says there will be no triallists, not sure if this is a good idea, you never know what hidden gem may be out there and I'm not saying we should be overrun with them, but Col has been very selective in his signings and could do the same with triallists. Never say never. Now where are those promotion odds............

A user, Selby says...

Fair play to Colin. He's been very astute. Think we should keep Daniel out of pre season though to stop him being injured!!!

On paper the team looks pretty reasonable so let's hope we get a good start and gain some confidence to push on.

Providing he can stay fit, McBreen should provide the focal point up front that we have so badly missed since Clayton left.

Speaking of which, it is such a shame we couldn't get Donaldson back, or get Richards for the matter, due to money -makes me even more annoyed that we kept hold of Farrell.

Colin has got a strong squad now, though the fact that they so many are tall doesn't automatically mean they can defend set pieces.

From January onward, before Clayton left, he underperformed in 90% of the games - uninterested and not bothered. At least by getting McBreen back, we have a player who was consistently impressive and wants to play for this club - great positive move. The Board must have been drunk to sanction this deal.

Great signing this by Big Col.

I'm hoping it'll be the final piece in the jigsaw for our promotion push.

With McBreen and Trigger's best made Sodje, we could be in for an exciting season.

C'mon York!!!

Mcbreen is quality and more importantly seems to want to play for us, Clayton is a York City legend but was uninterested after signing for hibs and didn't put any effort in for the team, Richards would have been good but couldn't see him being the target man we needed, as for Farrell, if he works on his finishing he could be awesome, that is the only thing missing from his game as he cannot be faulted for effort and always gives 100%.

Pete H,

Walker stated when McBreen was originally mentioned that he had targets ahead of him. We know Beckett was approached earlier, and I'd guess Richards and Donaldson were ahead of him too given Walker's comments suggest he ruled those two out on financial reasons.
