MAKESHIFT striker Sean Newton’s brace could not prevent York City from only sharing the spoils 2-2 against lowly Leamington.

The Minstermen threw away the chance to take maximum points from their final home game when Matt Dodd headed in an 89th-minute equaliser.

Alex Kempster’s hapless own goal had earlier sent the part-time Midlanders into the interval with a 1-0 lead.

The first chance of the afternoon saw Kieran Dunbar’s 30-yard free kick sail over the home crossbar after Kempster had given the ball away close to the halfway line and Hamza Bencherif committed a lazy foul.

Ahmed Obeng and Daniel Udoh then combined in the City penalty box to tee up a 15-yard drive for Callum Gittings that was comfortably gathered by Adam Bartlett.

The Minstermen’s first shot of the match arrived on 22 minutes when Aidan Connolly won the ball in the visitors’ half, charged forward and curled a 20-yard effort that was pushed around his right-hand post by Brakes keeper Tony Breeden.

Newton also headed wide at the far post from a Josh Law corner before seeing a follow-up effort blocked after Simon Heslop’s firm edge-of-the-box strike had been parried out by Breeden.

An off-balance Connolly went on to fire well off target from 15 yards while, for Leamington, Jack Edwards’ weak long-range shot bounced harmlessly wide.

But, on 42 minutes, Paul Holleran’s men took the lead in bizarre fashion.

Gittings swung a free kick in from the left and it landed to Kempster who, all alone in the six-yard box, appeared to lose his bearings, mix his feet up and slice past Bartlett.

City started the second half on the front foot although, after working himself into a good position, Connor Brown sliced a 20-yard shot that almost uprooted the corner flag.

Law also curled off target from a similar distance before Newton levelled on 56 minutes.

A square pass across the penalty box from Kempster saw Connolly skip over a Junior English challenge, taking him clear through the left channel.

With Breeden rushing out of his goal, Connolly attempted to deftly lift the ball over the Brakes keeper and, when his effort was blocked, the ball broke to Newton, who drove into an unguarded net from ten yards.

On 66 minutes, Bencherif headed wide following Dan Parslow’s long free kick into the away box.

Further chances came with respective volleys from David Ferguson and sub Connor Smith hitting the roof of the Longhurst and finding Breeden’s arms after good work down the flanks by Brown and Adriano Moke.

A 15-yard hooked attempt by Newton also drifted into Breeden’s arms before the skipper grabbed his second goal of the game on 86 minutes.

Good persistence by Moke saw him unleash a powerful rising edge-of-the-box effort that Breeden could only push up into the air and Newton jumped to head into an inviting net.

But the lead was shortlived with Liam Canavan sending in a cross from the left and fellow sub Dodd climbing highest at the far post to head past Bartlett on 89 minutes. The final whistle then heralded chants of “You’re Not Fit to Wear the Shirt” from fed-up David Longhurst Stand supporters.
