YOUTH-TEAM manager Steve Torpey is leaving York City to become a coach educator with the Professional Footballers' Association.

Torpey, who first joined City’s coaching team in December 2008, will move on next week to work for the PFA in the north-east region.

On his new role, the former Scunthorpe and Lincoln striker said: “It is a fresh challenge and a great opportunity to progress my career. I am going to be working in the north-east helping current and former professionals and scholars work towards their UEFA 'B' licences.

"As an academy, we have produced some excellent young players and I believe many of the current crop of youngsters at the club are good enough to go on and earn professional contracts.”

At the age of 38, Torpey even made two appearances for City’s first team at the end of the 2008/09 as the team battled relegation from the Conference, but he did not feature in the subsequent 2-0 FA Trophy final defeat to Stevenage at Wembley.

He also stood in once as caretaker manager during a 4-0 defeat at Newport in October 2010 following the departure of Martin Foyle and served as assistant-manager to Nigel Worthington and Russ Wilcox.
