YORK City bowed out of the FA Youth Cup following a 1-0 third qualifying round tie against Salford at Bootham Crescent.

Mani Ogunrinde, who has been a member of the Ammies’ first-team squad in the past, grabbed the only goal of the game on 40 minutes.

For City, Ryan Edmondson and Zac Lawrence went closest to getting on the scoresheet, with both hitting the frame of the goal, as first-team boss Martin Gray and sporting director Dave Penney watched on from the stands.

But it was Salford who won the chance to draw a Sky Bet League One or Two outfit in the first round proper.

City went close to opening the scoring against Salford when Flynn McNaughton dragged a shot narrowly wide.

Striker Edmondson’s close-range shot was then directed off the post in unconventional fashion by away keeper Marcel Wusciewicz.

But the hosts fell behind when winger Ogunrinde capitalised on a slip by defender Jake Watson and rounded keeper Ryan Whitley before netting.

Just past the hour, Lawrence’s long range effort was scrambled against an upright again by Wusiewicz., whilst Edmondson could not quite reach the rebound.

Edmondson’s header also forced a finger-tip save from the Salford keeper and, the last chance of the night saw McNaughton turn a corner over the crossbar in stoppage time.

City: Whitley, Kemp, Lawrence, Ward, Rogerson, Watson, Harrison, Haswell, Edmondson, McNaughton, N Jackson. Unused substitutes: Dyer, Wilton, Berry, Overton, W.Jackson.
