BRACKLEY Town will arrive at York City having lost just one of their last 23 matches.

The Northamptonshire outfit have only been beaten by National League North title favourites Salford City during that time.

That 2-0 September away win represents the one defeat in an impressive seven-month sequence stretching back to mid-March.

But Kevin Wilkin’s men have looked a little more vulnerable recently, with four league draws, either side of the Salford setback, meaning his team have failed to take maximum points in their last five sixth-tier contests.

FA Cup progress has been made during that time with triumphs over Kingstonian (3-0) and Braintree (4-1) teeing up a fourth-qualifying round home tie against Billericay a week tomorrow.

The Saints made headlines in that competition last term, reaching the second round proper after knocking out League One Gillingham 4-3 in a replay victory before bowing out 1-0 at Blackpool.

Attacking midfielder Jimmy Armson was the hero of the hour then, hitting a hat-trick against the Gills, but he has been sidelined for Brackley’s last nine matches and remains doubtful for the Bootham Crescent contest.

Armson had also hit the ground running this season and remains the team’s top scorer on six goals, including an amazing four in 14 minutes against NLN whipping boys North Ferriby.

That August 12 away win was Brackley’s last in the league, having taken three points from a possible 12 on the road since.

But, with the Minstermen’s 2010 play-off finalist Luke Graham marshalling their defence, the St James Park side still boast the division’s second-meanest back line – a record of eight goals conceded only trumped by Salford (seven).

A record of five draws, meanwhile, is a league high, matched by mid-table pair Darlington and Curzon Ashton.

That habit has seen third-placed Brackley slip six points off the pace being set by top-two Harrogate and Salford, having started 2017/18 with five straight victories.

Stability appears to have been the key to the progress made by the Saints with ten players who started February’s 1-0 FA Trophy away defeat against the Minstermen still on the club’s books.

The exception is net-minder Laurie Walker, who returned to Hemel Hempstead in the summer.

Former Kidderminster keeper Danny Lewis now dons the gloves.
