JON Parkin bagged a brace to send York City through to the FA Cup third qualifying round at National League North title favourites Salford.

The home team had earlier taken the lead on the stroke of half-time through Liam Hogan’s header.

But Parkin levelled the scores early in the second half with the 200th goal of his career.

The former Hull and Stoke striker went on to claim a fortunate winner on 85 minutes when he deflected an Amari Morgan-Smith shot into the home net.

City settled the better of the two teams with Louis Almond, operating in a more central role behind strikers Morgan-Smith and Parkin, trying his luck with two early chances from distance.

But the first was dragged well wide and the second lacked power and would have missed the target had home keeper Max Crocombe not gathered.

Just past the quarter-hour mark, Parkin then blasted over from the edge of the box with Simon Heslop unmarked to his right after a strong run down the left flank by Morgan-Smith.

Josh Law also saw a 25-yard free kick deflected over off the Salford defensive wall, before the hosts mustered their first goal attempt – a long-range Hogan drive that sailed way too high on 32 minutes.

A Scott Burton cross from the left then saw Mani Dieseruvwe’s downward header bounce wide, but the Lancashire outfit forged in front in the second minute of first-half stoppage time. Hogan showed most desire in the visitors’ box to meet Mark Shelton’s left-wing free kick to the far post and headed over Jon Worsnop into the opposite corner.

After the interval, Almond went close with a curling 25-yard effort but, at the other end, Carl Piergianni headed against the bar from a Josh Askew free kick, awarded for deliberate handball by Hamza Bencherif.

But the Minstermen were level on 54 minutes when Parkin met Almond’s low cross from the right with a firm eight-yard first-time finish.

Newton went on to blast wide after a Morgan-Smith lay-off just past the hour and the latter’s firm drive moments later was well parried low to his right by Crocombe, before Bencherif followed up and somehow shot across the face of goal from two yards out.

But, on 68 minutes, Worsnop’s bar was tested again when stretching home sub Jack Redshaw volleyed a Richie Allen cross from the left.

At the other end, City sub Kaine Felix blazed over after racing through the right channel, while Parkin shot wide after Newton’s long throw fell to his feet and Whittle volleyed out of the ground from 20 yards.

The home side were still threatening on the counter and Worsnop did well to keep out Mike Phenix’s edge-of-the-box drive by diving to his left.

After Theo Wharton, Newton and Whittle attempts then failed to extend Crocombe, City took an 85th-minute lead.

Morgan-Smith’s bobbling 15-yard shot would not have troubled Crocombe, but the ball spun past the deceived home keeper after deflecting off Parkin.

City's passage into the next round was duly confirmed when Lois Maynard's 20-yard thumping drive in the second minute of stoppage time saw Worsnop's crossbar rattled for a third time in the half.
