NEW net-minder Jon Worsnop has no concerns about York City’s lack of a goalkeeping coach, having been moulded by one of the world’s greats at the club’s Wigginton Road training ground.

Worsnop, 34, was a teenage hopeful at Bradford City when he used to travel to North Yorkshire to attend sessions, overseen by ex-Everton and Wales legend Neville Southall.

At the turn of the century, former two-time English Championship, double FA Cup and European Cup Winners’ Cup winner Southall was keeper coach for both the Minstermen and Bradford.

The departure of Craig Hinchliffe for Motherwell has left City without somebody to fill the current role, but Worsnop is comfortable with that scenario, having also been mentored by the likes of ex-Northern Ireland gloveman Alan Fettis and former England under-21 international Gary Walsh during those Southall sessions.

Russ Howarth and David Stockdale, who would go on to gain England under-20 honours and a call up to the Three Lions’ full squad respectively, were also part of a talented group that benefited from Southall’s knowhow.

Revealing that he still calls on Southall for advice if needed, Worsnop added: “The fact there’s no goalkeeping coach here doesn’t bother me.

“I’ve got all my coaching badges and I taught the young keepers at Chester. When I used to come to York for those sessions with Neville Southall, at the age of 19 and 20, I also learnt my trade from him.

“He was doing things in coaching then that people are only starting to do now and he was so far advanced, which was brilliant for me and I still keep in contact with him 15 years later. There was nothing he hadn’t done really, so he was a big inspiration when I was coming through the ranks.

“There were four or five of us who used to train together and it was a really good group with the likes of Russ Howarth, Gary Walsh, Matt Clarke, Alan Fettis and David Stockdale. It was a true goalkeepers’ union and we helped each other out.”
