YORK City’s first-choice goalkeepers Scott Loach and Kyle Letheren are both doubtful for Saturday’s vital National League clash at Woking.

On-loan, former England under-21 international Loach has not trained since picking up a knee injury during Easter Monday’s 3-1 home defeat to Wrexham, while Letheren has contracted a virus.

Should both players be ruled out, then third-choice Luke Simpson would don the gloves, having only started two games and played once as a substitute since his summer switch from Watford.

The Minstermen head for their penultimate league game of the season hovering one place above the relegation zone on goal difference to face a Woking team three points ahead of them in the standings, with manager Gary Mills revealing: “Scotty has a swollen knee and might be a doubt.

“He got a knock against Wrexham and it blew up like a balloon. The swelling has gone down a bit, but he’s receiving treatment back at his club Notts County and it will be a last-minute decision on whether he plays.

“Kyle has also phoned in with diarrhoea and sickness, so nobody would want to be sat in my seat really at the moment, but that’s football. You get these little tests all the time and, hopefully, Scotty will be OK.”

Centre-back Hamza Bencherif will return to the fold at Kingfield after missing the bank-holiday clash against his parent club Wrexham due to the terms of his loan agreement.

He will replace Shaun Rooney in the starting line-up, as he is restored to the central position of the back three with Dan Parslow reverting to a right-sided role.

City have followed each of their last three loses with a win and, knowing a victory is guaranteed to lift his team above seventh-bottom Woking in the table, Mills remains confident the necessary results can be secured to steer the club clear of trouble.

“We’re in a situation that we didn’t want to be in, but I’m quite happy to be in, given that we would have been down in January before we got this squad of players together,” Mills reasoned. “The players have responded brilliantly to defeats before and we’ve got to do the same again at Woking.”
