SEAN Newton has revealed there is no free-kick taking hierarchy at York City.

The 28-year-old utility man, who possesses a deadly left foot, has been a regular contender for set-piece duty this term.

But he made way for Jon Parkin to open the scoring with a stunning dead-ball effort in Saturday’s 3-0 win against Braintree.

Last month, Yan Klukowski also struck a stoppage-time equaliser at Sutton after Vadaine Oliver had been fouled just outside the box and Newton explained that nobody is precious about taking ownership of such duties at Bootham Crescent.

“The one on Saturday was a right-footed free kick and Parky’s on fire at the moment, so I was never going to stop him taking it,” Newton reasoned. “He said he wanted it and looked confident and he did what he’s done all his career.

“With us, it’s not case of somebody saying ‘I’m on them’. It’s about whoever feels the most confident at that time.

“That’s why Parky took that one and why Yan took the one at Sutton. We also have various players who can do what they’ve done, which is good for us.”

Stand-in skipper Newton will also have no problem to relinquishing the armband against Bromley tonight if Simon Heslop earns a recall to the starting XI.

“For any player to captain of a team like York is a good feeling, but I was just standing in for Simon Heslop and, hopefully, he’ll be fighting for his place again now,” the vice-captain added.

City’s reserves will conclude their Central League season against Grimsby this afternoon in a 1pm kick off at the club’s training ground.
