SIMON Lappin is hoping to make a late bid for York City’s FA Trophy final squad at Wembley.

The 34-year-old midfielder, who once played for Norwich in the Premier League, has never graced the hallowed turf and his hopes of changing that this season looked remote when he ruptured his Achilles during February’s 1-1 home draw against Maidstone.

But, while the injury immediately ruled Lappin out of playing a part in the rest of the league campaign, a three-week gap to the Trophy showpiece against Macclesfield on Sunday, May 21 might still give the Scotsman an outside chance of fulfilling a career-long dream.

By then, close to three-and-a-half months of rehabilitation will have passed and City chief Gary Mills is keen to have the experienced playmaker heavily involved under the famous arch, regardless of whether he is fit enough to feature or not.

“Lapps is getting his medical boot off and will be getting everything moving now so, you never know, he might just sneak into the Wembley reckoning,” Mills reasoned. “He was gutted to get injured and we did miss his range of passing and leadership in midfield for a few weeks.

“He has been the first to knock on my door and text the lads with his congratulations when we’ve been winning games though and he’s a big, big team and squad player. He’s telling me he might just make it for the Trophy final and, if he’s not able to get on the pitch, he will be with us because he deserves to be.”
