A THUNDEROUS Yan Klukowski free kick completed an amazing late comeback as York City snatched a point at Sutton.

The Minstermen trailed 2-0 on 86 minutes after Sean Newton’s bizarre own goal doubled the home side’s lead following Nicky Bailey’s second-half strike.

But sub Scott Fenwick reduced the arrears on 89 minutes and, in the fifth minute of stoppage time, fellow-replacement Klukowski secured a 2-2 draw in spectacular style.

Earlier, a cagey start to the match saw Bedsente Gomis fire way off target from 25 yards for the hosts, while City skipper Simon Heslop survived a penalty appeal when he appeared to nudge into Kieron Cadogan.

Jack Jebb also shot waywardly from distance, while Jon Parkin diverted a firmly-driven Newton cross on to the bar, but was flagged offside.

Sutton striker Adam Coombes went on to drag across the face of City’s goal from ten yards before an ambitious Parkin attempt from close to the halfway line almost uprooted the corner flag.

Midway through the half, Vadaine Oliver latched on a to a long Kyle Letheren kick, but drilled straight at Yellows keeper Will Puddy from 20 yards.

Oliver then had the best chance of the half on 29 minutes, when he ran unopposed to meet Alex Whittle’s left-wing cross, only to head wide of the far post.

For Sutton, Jamie Collins’ full-blooded volley flashed wide and Gomis went close from distance, while Dean Beckwith cleared the crossbar from eight yards after Newton had curled a free kick into Puddy’s arms.

Letheren was called into his first save of the afternoon on 55 minutes – a routine catch from Coombes’ overhead kick.

Just past the hour, meanwhile, Adriano Moke’s well-struck, edge-of-the-box half-volley was gathered low by Puddy.

Bailey eventually broke the deadlock on 74 minutes when he fired a first-time, 25-yard effort into Letheren’s bottom-right corner after Newton had headed out Kieron Cadogan’s left-wing cross.

Moments later, Heslop cleared Kevin Amankwaah’s far-post header off the line following a left-wing cross by Coombes, who also shot over on the turn from ten yards.

But the home side doubled their lead on 86 minutes when Newton’s firmly-struck back pass from close to the left touchline fizzed off the surface and found Letheren’s bottom-right corner.

Fenwick glanced in a near-post header from Yan Klukowski’s left-wing corner on 89 minutes and the latter also rose high to brush the netting before lining up a 20-yard free kick, won by Oliver, that he blasted into Puddy’s top-left corner.
