STEVE Torpey lamented York City’s mistakes following their North Riding County FA Senior Cup defeat at Whitby Town on Tuesday evening.

Vadaine Oliver headed home the visitors’ consolation goal in a comfortable 3-1 victory for Chris Hardy’s side.

Youth-team coach Torpey, who was standing in for Gary Mills on the touchline, blasted his players post-match after a lacklustre display at the Turnbull Ground.

“I thought it was a poor performance,” Torpey said. “It was a poor result and we’ve not come out with many positives.

“With the first goal, we conceded a free header in the middle of the six-yard box. You’ve got to defend those areas better.

“With the second goal, from the corner, he (Luke Bythway) is three yards out. They’re basic mistakes that have cost us.

“Finding any positives is tough. We’ve created some half-decent chances but their keeper has made some excellent saves.

“Individual players need to take some ownership and responsibility out there. It may be a young team, but there’s enough experience to pull people around.

“We were young at the back with Tyler Walton and Aaron Brettel, but apart from those two we’ve got enough experience.”

Oliver returned to the starting line-up for the trip to Whitby after the completion of his loan spell at Notts County, during which he scored once in 25 appearances.

The striker headed home unmarked to give City a route back into the game, but it proved only to be a consolation for the Minstermen.

Also named in the strong visiting squad for the clash was forward Richard Brodie, although Gary Mills chose not to put him into the 15-man starting squad.

“I spoke to the manager and he confirmed the team when I got to the ground,” Torpey added. “He told me that Richard wasn’t playing. I didn’t ask any questions, so that’s all I know.

“I thought Vadaine did okay. I don’t think we used him to full effect in the first half. We played a lot of short passes and on a bobbly pitch, that wasn’t conducive to him or us playing that kind of style.

“We went a little bit more direct in the second half and we were a bit more offensive.

“We got first and second balls off Vadaine and he scored a good goal. It was a powerful header. He did okay.”
