FORGET Hatchimals and Furby Connects – all seven-year-old Justine Barrett wanted for Christmas was to watch York City for the first-ever time.
Santa duly delivered with a ticket for the New Year’s Day clash with North Ferriby and, while the Minstermen might have gifted the visitors three festive points, it’s perhaps wise that Justine gets used to the highs and lows of following her local team from the start.
Justine was invited to the match as a guest of City’s Supporters’ Trust and watched the game from the Main Stand with her granddad Alan Ashton, who is a season-ticket holder from Wigginton and has supported the club for more than 60 years with his first game a reserve clash against Frickley Colliery in the 1950s.
His granddaughter was presented with a City goodie bag, photographed with on-loan striker Rhys Murphy and welcomed at half-time by PA announcer Robert Havercroft.
York City supporter liaison officer Phil Howden added: “It was great to welcome Justine for what we hope is the first in a lifetime of York City matches. For any City fan, your first game is special and one you will always remember.
“We are now planning a repeat of our Kids for a Quid initiative against Eastleigh on March 4 to provide more local kids with what we hope will be unforgettable memories.”
