CHESTER City will arrive at York City having not conceded a single National League goal for seven weeks.

The team from the Deva Stadium, managed by the Minstermen’s 1993 Wembley hero Jon McCarthy, have kept seven successive clean sheets in non-league football’s top tier.

It is now 11 hours and eight minutes, discounting stoppage time, since the Chester back-line was last breached in the league when Darren Carter scored for table-toppers Forest Green Rovers during a 2-1 away triumph back on September 3.

McCarthy’s side did, however, lose 1-0 at Southport in the FA Cup’s fourth qualifying round at the weekend and have only won one of their eight away fixtures this season.

That solitary 1-0 success came at North Ferriby United earlier this month but the Blues have now taken 16 points from a possible 18.

The only blemish in that otherwise 100 per cent run was a 0-0 draw at bitter rivals Wrexham, then managed by Gary Mills, prior to his re-appointment as City chief.

As a consequence of that fine form, Chester have recovered from a sticky start to sit 11th in the table – four points adrift of the play-off places.

McCarthy, now 46, has only used 19 players this term having previously been the assistant to Steve Burr, who was sacked last April.

He played 233 games and scored 38 goals during five seasons for the Minstermen, playing on the wing during the 1993 play-off final victory over Crewe.

Midfielder Elliott Durrell, who parted company with Wrexham following Mills’ appointment at the Racecourse Stadium in 2015, is Chester’s top scorer this season on four goals.

He exited the action at Southport after 29 minutes due to a sickness bug but is expected to recover in time to feature this weekend.

Ex-Cambridge and Kidderminster midfielder Tom Shaw is also set to be back in contention after missing the last two-and-a-half matches following a knock that saw him substituted during the interval at North Ferriby.

Left-back Evan Horwood, who had a loan spell with the Minstermen from Sheffield United 11 years ago, has made seven appearances, meanwhile, this campaign, but not featured in the league since mid-September, even though he was an 82nd-minute substitute at the weekend.

Horwood, now 30, ended last season at play-off winners Grimsby on loan from Sky Bet League Two champions Northampton, where he was released from in the summer.

Chester signed goalkeeper Alex Lynch from Bala Town this week. The former Wycombe Wanderers goalkeeper, 21, has represented Wales at under-19 level.

Chester (probable): Roberts, Vassell, Hughes, Astles, Hunt, Mahon, Shaw, Durrell, George, Richards, Alabi.
