SIMON Heslop will be a good acquisition for York City, according to former boss Gary Mills.

The Wrexham manager, who guided the Minstermen to a historic 2012 Wembley double, signed Heslop from Torquay midway through last season and offered him a contract extension over the summer.

But the 29-year-old midfielder signed for his home-town club instead, where City chief Jackie McNamara made him club captain.

Heslop is ruled out of this afternoon’s home match with Woking due to a one-match ban following his red card at Forest Green last weekend, but should return to face Mills’ Wrexham in North Wales on Monday, with his old manager saying: “He’s an honest player who works very, very hard and somebody you would want in your team at this level, which is why I offered him a contract.”

Mills added, meanwhile, that City will be facing an improving Wrexham team who bear all the hallmarks of their manager’s footballing principles.

“Everybody knows my teams and we will be playing the game the way it should be played,” he explained. “We fell just short last season after losing a few games over Christmas, but it’s a new squad now with just three players from last season and I feel we’re starting to gel together because the performances have got better in each game we’ve had.”
