YORK City threw away the chance of three points after conceding a 90th-minute goal against Boreham Wood.

The Minstermen had only just taken the lead themselves two minutes earlier as skipper Simon Heslop broke the deadlock in a turgid contest with a deflected effort.

But, when Scott Flinders could only punch a Connor Clifford free kick out as far as Ricky Shakes, the Wood winger found his vacated net from 20 yards to earn the visitors a 1-1 draw.

During a slow start to the game, raids down the left from Alex Whittle teed up early chances for Yan Klukoswki and Shaun Rooney.

The former’s far post-volley bounced wide from eight yards and the latter hoofed an edge-of-the-box effort well over.

At the other end, Boreham Wood skipper Kenny Davis smacked a 20-yard shot against the roof of the David Longhurst, Stand before Rooney headed over from a Klukowski corner for City.

Clovis Kamdjo went on to have the first on-target shot of the afternoon in the 36th minute, but his sidefooted, long-range attempt was gathered low to his left by Grant Smith.

A ten-yard Whittle chance then flashed across the visitors’ goal after Scott Fenwick’s low right-wing delivery had travelled to the far post.

City started the second half sloppily with Kamdjo losing the ball and Davis’ pass inside Rooney sending Adrian Moke clear through the left channel, but the ex-Bootham Crescent winger sidefooted weakly at Flinders.

A tame, 15-yard shot the turn by Angelo Balanta also failed to trouble Flinders.

The Minstermen went on to survive a very controversial moment on 67 minutes after a mix-up between Jack Higgins and Flinders saw Wood sub Morgan Ferrier charge clear.

He rounded Flinders before crashing to the ground in front of an open goal and referee waved aside all protests for a penalty, ruling there had been no contact and cautioning the bewildered forward for diving.

Richard Brodie, meanwhile, headed over for City from a right-wing Aidan Connolly free kick.

The hosts eventually broke the deadlock on 88 minutes when sub Kaine Felix won a corner on the right, which was delivered by Connolly and only cleared as far as Heslop 20 yards from goal.

City’s captain then found Smith’s bottom right-hand corner with the aid of a deflection.

But the joy was shortlived as the visitors levelled from the next attack.

Clifford pumped a left-wing free kick into the home box from close to the halfway line and, when Flinders could only punch as far as Shakes, the Wood winger ensured his side also remain unbeaten in 2016/17.
