YORK City manager Jackie McNamara is set to enter the transfer market for a new striker after Richard Brodie suffered an injury scare.

McNamara, who has already signed 20 new players this summer, is concerned about the lack of attacking options at his disposal – with just a week to go before the start of the new season.

Summer signing Brodie limped off against Harrogate Town on Wednesday night and will not figure in tomorrow's final pre-season friendly against Newcastle United at Bootham Crescent, kick-off 3pm.

It is unlikely that he will be ready to play in the opening league game against Maidstone United due to a swollen foot and ankle.

Although Scott Fenwick has impressed since arriving from Hartlepool United, the only other strikers pushing for a first team place are Reece Thompson, 22, and teenager Nick Kennedy.

Vadaine Oliver, meanwhile, remains on the transfer-list and is deemed surplus to requirements.

Asked if there was still a need to bolster the squad before next weekend's opening game at Maidstone United, McNamara said: "Never say never. One position – if anything – and that’s something we are looking at with the strikers to see if some of them are ready to push it.

"With Brodie going off (on Wednesday), it gives us a little problem," McNamara admitted. "Reece scored at Harrogate and has given himself a little opportunity but Kennedy is young. Is he ready to step in and stake a claim?"

A crowd favourite during his first spell with the club, Brodie, moved to Crawley for £300,000 but has spent the majority of the last five years drifting around the non-league scene.

He had been working hard to improve his fitness following his release by National League North part-timers Stockport County this summer and has admitted that this may be his last opportunity in full-time football.

McNamara says the 29-year-old is not in peak condition but still feels he can play an important role for the club this season.

"I would have liked to have given Brodie more game time," said McNamara. "His general fitness is OK, in terms of distance and stamina, but it’s the sharp stuff that we need to improve him on.

"He has still got a long way to go to get that match sharpness and fitness. He has been part-time last year and he is coming to full-time football now which is a different thing altogether.

"Brodie needs fitness. He has got a little bit to go until he is up to speed."
