YORK City manager Jackie McNamara admitted that his young players had been subjected to a lesson in physicality last night by Harrogate Town.

McNamara was far from happy with the way the 'friendly' at the CNG Stadium was played or handled by referee Gareth Rhodes.

The Minstermen suffered a fourth defeat in five pre-season games, losing 2-1 to the National League North side, and senior players Richard Brodie and Jack Higgins both suffered knocks.

"It was a good learning experience for the kids but not a great game. That's the only positive. It was not a great match at all," said McNamara afterwards.

"The kids will not have experienced that before in Academy football. That's the only plus. I am glad I played the other team (against Doncaster Rovers ) last night considering some of the tackles that went in. There should have been more yellow cards.

"It was a bit kick and rush from both times and percentage football on a pitch that is geared for passing.

"The side I had out last night would have been more suited to this test," he added. "They would have handled the physical and the passing side better but it's good for the kids to see that side of the game.

"It's not about time on the ball, you get a touch and someone is on top of you or smashing into the back of you. That is something they will learn quickly."

McNamara said Brodie was sore after a tackle 'through the back' and Higgins, who is unavailable against Newcastle United on Saturday due to a family commitment, had a tight groin.
