SUMMER signing Ben Barber risks missing the start of the new season with a hamstring injury, according to York City manager Jackie McNamara.

Barber was absent from York's pre-season photocall today - raising fears that he may be sidelined for a number of weeks.

The former Stoke City leftback has yet to be involved in York's pre-season friendlies after initially complaining about a sciatic nerve problem.

McNamara said: "Unfortunately, he has not had a great start with us due to injury. It's his hamstring. He is a couple of weeks behind now and we need to see how long he's going to be out? He is possibly a doubt for the start of the season."

Striker Vadain Oliver was the other notable absentee from yesterday's photocall at Bootham Crescent and is close to finalising a move to a League club.

After bringing in 18 new players, McNamara now has a 24 man squad at his disposal but is still looking for a second goalkeeper and is close to finalising a deal for defender Lanre Oyebanjo.

McNamara confirmed that a new goalkeeper has arrived on trial this week and may be involved in Saturday's home friendly against Bolton Wanderers but refused to reveal his identity.

"We have got a lad in for the next couple of days and we will have a look at him," he said. "We are waiting to see if we can use him on Saturday."

A decision on Oyebanjo, meanwhile, is set to be made over the weekend.

The former City player was released by Crawley Town after an injury ravaged season and is keen to return to Bootham Crescent.

However, York's medical staff have been carrying out detailed checks on his fitness before the club goes ahead and commits to a deal.

"Hopefully we will have some news on that over the weekend," said McNamara. "We are just making sure, with his injury, that he is OK. All being well, that will hopefully be done. We are just making sure that both parties are happy.

"It's all been positive. He seems like a good lad and he knows the club well and the fans," McNamara added. "Hopefully, his knee is nothing to worry about. He will be playing catch up but he looks a good addition to the squad if we can get him."

McNamara said the club was still awaiting confirmation of Oliver's departure, but added: "There is interest and, hopefully, for both parties, that can be sorted out as soon as possible."

Meanwhile Matty Dixon, who missed the trip to Stalybridge Celtic last weekend with a thigh strain, is again unavailable this weekend but has been pencilled in for a return to action next week.
