YORK City have set up a fundraising drive to replace Bootham Crescent's iconic David Longhurst Stand sign, which has fallen into disrepair.
The Shipton Street Stand was named in Longhurst's honour after the City striker tragically passed away on the pitch due to a heart condition during a game against Lincoln in September 1990.
Fans have recently contacted the club complaining about the sign's current appearance and, in response, City supporter liaison officer Phil Howden has launched a crowd fund, designed to meet the £1,500 cost of making and erecting a new one.
Within the first hour of the fund going live, £400 was contributed and any money raised above the figure needed will be donated to the British Heart Foundation.
Explaining the venture, Howden said: "Sadly, as much as the sign is an iconic feature of the ground, a number of fans have contacted me to say they would like a new sign out of respect for David Longhurst and there is a general feeling that a replacement would make the ground look a bit more presentable. Clearly, this is not something the club have budgeted for, so I am asking our fantastic supporters, and any local individuals or businesses, if they would be prepared to help fund a brand new sign".
