YORK City must win at Morecambe this afternoon to avoid setting a new club record for fewest league victories in a campaign.

The Minstermen have managed just seven successes this season, which is one less that the lowest tally in the club's history.

That dubious accolade has, until now, been the preserve of the 1991/92 side, managed first by John Bird and then John Ward.

They mustered eight, although a return of 16 draws meant that team finished fourth-bottom in the Football League - three positions above where Jackie McNamara's basement boys currently reside.

Anything less than a draw for the visitors at the Globe Arena will also see this term's hapless squad equal the record for lowest-points return in as season.

When campaigns, where the two-points-for-a-win system are converted into the modern format, Bobby Saxton's 1987/88 third division strugglers' meagre haul off 33 points still stands alone as the worst-ever league programme.

This term's team, managed by Russ Wilcox for the first 15 matches, caretaker chief Richard Cresswell for a game and McNamara for the last 29 fixtures, have amassed the same total ahead of their contest with the Shrimps.

Other seasons, traditionally put forward as the club's worst by supporters and observers, come off favourably in comparison.

The only other side to be relegated from the Football League - Chris Brass' 2003/04 group - won 44 points for example and the teams that went down from the old second and third division under Wilf McGuinness' stewardship collected 38 and 42 respectively.

Only maximum points, meanwhile, will prevent this group of City players from becoming the third-worst to ply their trade in the Football League for 20 years.

Disastrous seasons for Darlington (2009/10) and Doncaster (1997/98) saw those clubs win just 30 and 20 points respectively.

The next-lowest amount during the last two decades, though, saw Torquay relegated with 35 points in 2007.

City's chances of an away triumph also need to be placed in context with a record of just one win on the road all season - back on September 5 against a Newport team who had only won a point from their first five fixtures.

Only two other sides, managed surprisingly by Denis Smith and Tom Lockie in 1986/87 and 1966/67, have completed previous league campaigns with only a solitary victory on their travels.

Like the current side, Smith's team only drew five other games, meaning they alone hold the club record for lowest number of away points won in a season.

But, any kind of defeat at Morecambe, will see the class of 2015/16 register the worst-ever away column when goal difference is taken into account.

BRADLEY Fewster has won the final Press Player of the Month award of the season.

The on-loan Middlesbrough striker took the honours for April after claiming two goals during the month and also teeing up Kenny McEvoy for his consolation during last weekend's 4-1 home defeat to Bristol Rovers.

Fewster collected two points towards the standings as our second-highest rated City performer in that game.

He also shared the two bonus points on offer after jointly topping our online man-of-the-match poll with McEvoy.

The latter received three points as The Press' star man with our third-highest rated player Dave Winfield recognised with the remaining point on offer.

Winfield heads The Press Player of the Year leaderboard by one point from Scott Flinders prior to this afternoon's final fixture at Morecambe.
