I AM shocked by the plea from the chairman of York City FC requesting fans should put their hands in their pockets to find an extra £500,000 per season for the next two years to keep York City running (The Press, April 25).

Adults have to pay a minimum £18 entrance fee into Bootham Crescent but Jason McGill is now pleading for fans to assist the club in funding the potential £500,000 deficit a year due to the booting out of YCFC from the Football League.

A minimum admission charge of £18 amounts to an avid fan paying over £400 per season for home games only. This is before travel and refreshment costs.

Based on an average York fan home game attendance of 2,500 that would mean every fan having to pluck out of their pocket another £200 a season or even more if attendances drop having been relegated.

I cannot see the attendance being anywhere near 2,500 per home game now. Therefore, Jason is really asking City fans to pay 50 per cent more to keep the club afloat.

Mr McGill, people in York cannot afford that amount of money every two weeks. It might be manageable for business people who earn a comparatively larger amount of money than the average fan who is struggling to keep their financial head above the breadline.
