WILLIAM Boyle is hoping it's a case of third time lucky after agreeing a loan move to York City from Huddersfield.

The 20-year-old defender has agreed a deal that will keep him at Bootham Crescent until January following previous stints with National League pair Kidderminster and Macclesfield.

Both moves did not quite go to plan for the Terriers' under-21 captain, following his Huddersfield debut as an 89th-minute substitute in February's 3-0 Championship victory over Reading.

At Kidderminster, the 6ft 1in centre back was played out of position and limited to two outings - both 3-0 defeats to Bristol Rovers and Welling in April - whilst he was never given a first-team opportunity with Macclesfield after joining the Silkmen at the start of this season.

Reflecting on those moves and his next challenge, Boyle said: "I played left back at Kidderminster and, whilst it's not my preferred position and I definitely feel more comfortable in the centre, it was a good experience. It was a taste of first-team football and what it's all about.

"At Macclesfield, things didn't go to plan which was very disappointing. Without slagging anybody off, I didn't get an explanation as to why I didn't get a chance, so I was left in the dark.

"I didn't understand that, but I guess these things happen in football and I'm just relishing this chance now. I've come out to get games and, hopefully, kick on personally, whilst helping the club climb the table.

"It will be a good experience for me to be in and around a first-team environment where - week in, week out - you're working towards three points because they are everything."

Despite his limited senior experience, Boyle also insists he will not be afraid to bark out orders when he lines up alongside his new team-mates.

"I like to think, even though I'm relatively young, that I can go in and communicate with people and pull them around by organising," he explained. "I also look to defend first and foremost but, if it's on, I like to play the ball out as well."

Boyle caught City boss Jackie McNamara's eye during Huddersfield's 2-0 U21 victory over Leeds on Monday and, describing how his switch to Bootham Crescent materialised, the John Smith's Stadium reserve added: "I received a phone call on Monday night saying that York had shown an interest and wanted to take me on loan.

"I had a chat with the under-21s coach and academy manager the next day and we all agreed it was a great opportunity for me to play in a competitive first-team environment."

Trips to top-seven teams Leyton Orient and Portsmouth represent a challenging start to Boyle's Minstermen career but he admitted he is looking forward to both tests.

"They're both big clubs," he reasoned. "Leyton Orient have just come down and are in the play-off positions, so I'm expecting that to be a tough game.

"Then, it's Portsmouth on Tuesday night at Fratton Park and they're a massive club, so it's a big fixture that I'm looking forward to and we're hoping to get something from both matches."

Boyle also has another admirer with City connections - former defender and youth-team coach Ricky Sbragia.

In 2012, Sbragia called the player up for two Scotland U18 training camps.

Boyle is now planning on impressing Sbragia in City colours with the latter now in charge of his country's U21 team.

"Ricky came and watched me a couple of times playing for the youth team at Huddersfield and invited me up to two training camps," Boyle pointed out. "I then got a hip flexor injury at Huddersfield, which meant I couldn't join the squad for the next match and I've not received a call-up since.

"It was a good experience working with Ricky though and it's a personal target for me to work with him again at under-21 level. I'm striving towards that and my chances would be enhanced massively if I can do well for York."
