YORK City boss Russ Wilcox felt his team’s terrific comeback was the perfect tribute to former striker David Longhurst.

Trailing 2-0 to Carlisle and a man down following Vadaine Oliver’s 51st-minite red card, Luke Summerfield and Josh Carson both netted at the end of the pitch where Longhurst lost his life and in front of the stand that still bears his name.

Earlier, a moving tribute had seen both sets of players and staff face the same way while leading a round of applause in memory of the 25th-year anniversary of his passing away.

Longhurst’s father and brother also attended the game as guests of the club with Wilcox, who played alongside the talented forward at Northampton, saying: “It was fitting that all the goals were scored at that end and maybe, when we were losing 2-0 with ten men, he was up there looking down on us.

“I thought it was a great tribute before the game with everybody facing the David Longhurst Stand and very emotional too. It was brilliant to remember him in that way and shows what a terrific family club this is.”
