TROUBLED Newport County play host to York City tomorrow having lost 11 of their last 13 games.

The Exiles’ only win during that miserable sequence was a 2-0 success at Bootham Crescent in April but, of the side that started that day, only goalkeeper Joe Day, captain Mark Byrne and winger Jan Klukowski remain at the club and, at home, the Welshmen are without a victory in seven contests since beating Luton 1-0 back in March.

As a consequence, Terry Butcher’s team are currently propping up the Football League with Luton and Dagenham the only other sides in the division still waiting for their first win of the campaign.

Off the pitch, meanwhile, a Supporters’ Trust are trying to raise £195,000 to take over the club with lottery winner Les Scadding having stepped down as the team’s benefactor and chairman.

Money was raised by teenage defender Regan Poole’s £100,000 deadline-day move to Manchester United this week.

Fellow defender Kevin Feely also quit the club to play Gaelic football in Ireland, while Matt Partridge was brought in from Dagenham & Redbridge to cover for both departures and is expected to make his debut against the Minstermen.

Ex-Ipswich, Rangers and England defender Butcher, who has yet to taste victory as County chief, will still be without crocked defensive pair Andrew Hughes and Matt Taylor tomorrow, as well as winger Nathan Ralph.

Hughes has been out with cruciate damage since December, whilst an ankle problem has not seen the experienced Taylor kick a ball since his summer switch from Cheltenham and Ralph has not featured either following his move from Yeovil.

Ex-Minsterman Alex Rodman and Klukowski are doubtful too.

Rodman, recruited from Gateshead during the close season, returned to the starting line-up after an injury-hindered beginning to his Newport career for Tuesday’s penalty shoot-out Johnstone’s Paint Trophy defeat but had to be substituted in that game with an ankle problem.

Defender Danny Holmes is due to be back in contention, though, after missing the Swindon game due to a knock.

Former Dagenham midfielder Medy Elito will return as well after attending his cousin’s funeral in midweek.

Butcher made his five permitted changes for the Swindon match with goalkeeper Rhys Taylor, on-loan midfielder Josh Laurent and academy graduate Tom Owen-Evans all given first competitive starts at the club.

Teenager Aaron Collins, meanwhile, pressed his claims for a place in the first XI against City by scoring against Swindon as Rodman’s replacement to leave the tie deadlocked after 90 minutes.

He went on to miss the crucial shoot-out spot kick but was also the subject of bids from Championship outfit Burnley before the transfer window closed on Tuesday.

Winger Collins could now be assigned with the task of providing the ammunition for striker Scott Boden – the club’s leading marksman on three goals - in attack.

Newport (probable): Day, Barrow, Holmes, Partridge, Parselle, Collins, Laurent, Byrne, Elito, Boden, John-Lewis.
