YORK City boss Russ Wilcox has warned his side not to under-estimate Saturday’s Sky Bet League Two hosts Newport.

The Welsh club, who are currently propping up the Football League, have problems on and off the pitch with their lottery-winning benefactor Les Scadding having stepped down as chairman and withdrawn his financial support.

Former England legend Terry Butcher, meanwhile, is still waiting for his first win in charge since taking charge over in the summer, but Wilcox has insisted his players, with four points from a possible 15 after their opening five fixtures, must not be complacent ahead of the 1pm kick off.

He said: "They're having a tough time and have only got one point, so everyone thinks we will just turn up and win, but that doesn't happen at any level and leagues can change quickly. Southend were at the wrong end of the table this time last year and ended up getting promoted, but we've got to go there positive, get on the front foot and take the game to them.

"They did the double over us last season but there's been lots of changes at both clubs since. They have a new manager who is very experienced and I'm sure he'll eventually turn things around but, hopefully, not before Saturday."

Butcher became a footballing icon in this country when he refused to be substituted despite his international shirt being drenched with blood following a head injury.

He stayed on the pitch to help the Three Lions qualify for the 1990 World Cup finals with a 0-0 draw at Sweden and Wilcox expects him to demand the same level of commitment from his new charges, adding: "You always remember that image of him with the bandage on and blood seeping through. That's his character and he will be looking to instil that in his team."

City will be giving late fitness tests to Luke Summerfield (foot) and Reece Thompson (groin) before deciding on their starting XI, while Wilcox also suggested that he might have a couple of other injury concerns.

"We've got three or four players who could be doubtful, but we don't want to name them and help Newport with their preparations and team selection," he explained.

Wing-back David Tutonda will be returning to the club where he made 12 appearances last season on loan from Cardiff and scored two goals - including one during Newport's 2-0 win at Bootham Crescent in April, which was the last time County collected three points.

Wilcox is now hoping for a repeat performance against Tutonda's old team-mates, saying: "I knew about him before, but he caught my eye in that game against us.

"He was outstanding and has done well for us. He's a confident lad for his age and is in a confident group of players."

The City chief has reiterated, meanwhile, the need to for his team to start shooting on sight after missed chances cost the club during last weekend's 2-1 home defeat to Mansfield.

"We had 11 attempts on goal against Mansfield but only got one on target and that's not good enough.," he declared. "We've been putting finishing drills on all week and the first port of call must be to make sure the keeper has to make a save.

"When you look back, people like Femi (Ilesanmi) and Vadaine (Oliver) both had good chances last Saturday, but put them over the bar. Against Hartlepool in the game before, their keeper was man of the match, but Brian Jensen didn't have a shot to save for Mansfield and that has to change."

Wilcox went on to praise Tom Platt's reaction to being loaned out to Harrogate Town with the 21-year-old midfielder opting to carry on training with the Minstermen, as well as twice a week with the Conference North outfit "I've had good reports on him already and he trained with us today and will be training with Harrogate tonight because he wanted to do that," Wilcox revealed. "It's good for him to go there and taste first-team football again.

"He's not in our squad but it's only early September and he showed last season that he can make a big impact when needed. People might think that him going out on loan means he's out of the door but that's not the case and I'm sure there's a future here for him."
